The county executive doesn't pass laws. That's the job of the county council.

The reason why America is a country of immigrants and year after year people from all over the world are knocking at the door is because of the opportunities of American Capitalism. Our low taxes and low regulations and high innovations are what drive people here. And you can see this at the local level too, why high skilled professionals and businesses flock to Arlington or Tysons and not Silver Spring or Bethesda.
Immigrants are put off by Trump and right wing nonsense but they are also annoyed at basic white American liberals who think they know better then them about socialism. That’s why high-immigrant diverse places like Gaithersburg and Germantown voted for Blair and why old money white liberals in Takoma Park and Bethesda voted for Elrich. Moderate politics and Capitalism work.

As the daughter of immigrants, I can tell you that you're making a lot of assumptions here . . . and you know what they say happens when you assume.

As the son of an anchor immigrant, can confirm that PP is correct. Dad came here because taxes are low and incomes are high. Also wanted to escape oppressive socialism. It isn't funi living in a country where you have to constantly ration food supplies.

I work with many people from Europe. I love how they constantly S all over the USA for not having universal health care, free college, free childcare, etc. etc. Yet they all continue to stay because they sure as shit love the fact that they're making 1.5-3x more in salary here than they would in Europe and so don't have to pay 50% income taxes. They're hypocrites.

You do realize that not all immigrants come from socialist countries, right? And you also realize that socialism can take many forms? And that some of the most widely-accepted social insurance programs the US has -- e.g., Medicare, Social Security -- are a form of socialism?
