We like living in Bethesda because DH has a walking commute to work, the public schools are the best in the area and we wanted a pleasant suburban neighborhood where we can still walk to a downtown for restaurants, metro, shops. We come from a country where taxes are higher, and there are significantly more social services, so for us Elrich is not the big bad socialist wolf at all. I'm always flabbergasted at Americans, living in a country where no politician in power is remotely leftist, who scream bloody murder every time someone makes a very teeny weeny move left of center

Then why did you leave your high tax country for low tax America? It’s like all the Californians moving to Texas and wondering why Texas can’t have California policies. You came to America because there are more opportunities than in your country. |
DP. How do you know why the PP came to the US? |
The reason why America is a country of immigrants and year after year people from all over the world are knocking at the door is because of the opportunities of American Capitalism. Our low taxes and low regulations and high innovations are what drive people here. And you can see this at the local level too, why high skilled professionals and businesses flock to Arlington or Tysons and not Silver Spring or Bethesda. Immigrants are put off by Trump and right wing nonsense but they are also annoyed at basic white American liberals who think they know better then them about socialism. That’s why high-immigrant diverse places like Gaithersburg and Germantown voted for Blair and why old money white liberals in Takoma Park and Bethesda voted for Elrich. Moderate politics and Capitalism work. |
Ah, so the reason you (think you) know why the PP came to the US is: those are the stereotypes you believe in. |
Agree with all of the above -- especially the highlighted text. |
As the daughter of immigrants, I can tell you that you're making a lot of assumptions here . . . and you know what they say happens when you assume. |
As the son of an anchor immigrant, can confirm that PP is correct. Dad came here because taxes are low and incomes are high. Also wanted to escape oppressive socialism. It isn't funi living in a country where you have to constantly ration food supplies. I work with many people from Europe. I love how they constantly S all over the USA for not having universal health care, free college, free childcare, etc. etc. Yet they all continue to stay because they sure as shit love the fact that they're making 1.5-3x more in salary here than they would in Europe and so don't have to pay 50% income taxes. They're hypocrites. |

He was better than the conservative option but I didn't vote for him in the primaries.
He's ok. Not good not bad, just ok. I support his Covid response and think if other counties and cities around the US had done the same thing we wouldn't be in this predicament right now. Sometimes you need sticks (making everyone wear masks indoors and limiting indoor dining) and not carrots with stubborn people who refuse to get vaccinated and are not that bright. It's obvious he has worked as an educator,.so realizes there are a lot of people out there who need strict rules. I would like to see someone who is socially progressive, yet business minded, to help the county with it's economic situation. |
I moved here to be close to work. and no, for the first time, I don't think it's worth it. |
Errr... don’t we have one of the highest vaccination rates in the country? Enrich loves the power and control. |
| *Elrich |
Because of research opportunities. Please note that I am not the one complaining here, YOU are. I'm happy where I am
I am merely pointing out that America is probably the first world country that has the fewest social safety nets and lowest taxes, even here in MoCo. Before you wring your hands about Elrich and others like him, be mindful of that. |
| I wouldn’t hire Elrich to mow my lawn, and I don’t even have one. |
Elrich management style: He'd spend six months trying to figure out a way to mow it without the use of fossil fuel energy. He'd circumvent the procurement process to get a hand-picked consultant on board. He'd pay them far too much (see procurement circumvention) to recommend the use of a scythe. But you know he's never going to pick up a scythe and do the actual work. He's too busy researching and chatting about rain gardens. So instead of mowing your lawn, he'd pass a law to ban lawns. And then fine you for having one. |
