In diminishing order of frequency:

Roblox
Gamers on YouTube
Sports
Cars and how he wants to modify them so he can drift race
Minecraft
What happened during his day
How bored he is in school and why
Books he's reading
Cool things he wants to do or own when he's grown up

12-yr-old just made it through year & a half of pandemic life ... kudos to him on connecting with friends & finding a topic to chat about. No race/timetable on maturity (not that superheroes are immature)...I've loved reading all of these lists and glad that all of these kids can be loved for who they are at this moment.

This is the between times of developmental progress… the daily range of topics is from deez nuts jokes to matchbox cars and superheroes. It’s confounding to adults but developmentally appropriate.

Don’t try to manage your kids interests and call too much attention to “what your friends are doing.” The world will give enough feedback that he will drop these younger interests in due course. That kind of feedback is the world’s job to give… not the parents.

Sports
Guitar
Girls (it’s just starting)
Video games
Things they want to do/plan

Most of the time they’re cooking up some club or scheme with neighborhood kids. A giant nerf war, a forest training squad, a Zelda league competition..

Minecraft, roblox, YouTube, the comic books he’s writing, his theories about the universe, dogs, our dog, cute dog videos, food, snacks, when’s dinner, can I have another snack? Can I have more sugar? Then back to Minecraft.

Funny you mentioned particle physics. That and random science YouTube videos that no one ever watches besides him. It's hard for him to find topics of conversation. He's a quiet kid.

If only we could get him to talk about anime and sports.

Mine loves random history Youtubes.

OverSimplified is one of his favorites.

Various video games, tv shows, robotics and Roth IRAs.

Like his father, my kid is a dork with a great group of friends who have similar interests. I’m ecstatic about it.

Hell my 35 year old DH still talks about that stuff.
