Advice for longer runs?

Remember, your choice about food and water during a run is exactly that: a choice. There's no absolute need to eat or drink. Many people might appear dehydrated but are fine: one world-record marathon was done by a runner who sweated out 10 percent of his body weight during the run! (https://www.runnersworld.com/training/a20859056/just-because-you-sweat-doesnt-mean-youre-dehydrated/) Many people above noted that they prefer not to eat or drink much even on long runs.

But if you want to eat or drink, definitely do; just like there's nothing wrong with NOT drinking on a long run, there's nothing wrong with drinking on a short run if it makes you feel better.

lifelong runner. this sounds like stupid advice. It is regularly in the 80s when I run, so I always carry a water bottle on anything over 3 miles because I get thirsty. Heat exhaustion is real and is exacerbated by dehydration.

I don’t carry water for runs under 8 miles even in the summer. For longer runs, I ran a loop in my neighborhood and stashed one or two bottles of water with a nuun tablet in them. My loop was about 3 miles so I would drink some every time I came around. For long runs where there is a water fountain, I’ll carry a Nathan hand held water bottle which fastens to my palm and refill when I pass a fountain. I also eat a Clif Shot block or two every few miles. They go in the side pocket of my leggings or bike shorts.
