Yes, our church requires a financial contribution to be a voting member. It doesn't say how much money, though, so it's largely a symbolic way of showing a commitment. Is it possible they were just trying to help you learn the requirements of membership because they'd like you to join?

"Help you learn...."

Op - RUN.

Once there you were provided with a form to sign, pledging that you will properly tithe the full 10% of your earnings into the offering plate for the next 4 years. Form required signing and return by the next Sunday. If you didn't sign you would be called.

Did you sign?

That’s not a church, it’s cult. Run, OP.

Like don't come back unless we complete the direct debit form attached to the email. We were so turned off. Is it just good business or money grubbing?

Attend services as members
Or
Attend services as visiting guests

Do you want to be members

Fake and "no evidence" are two different things.

It’s a fake quote. There’s no evidence he said those words, and the basis for claiming he did is a movie pp admits isn’t proof. Just because it’s on Facebook doesn’t make it true.

Wtf. That is not how most Christian churches work. That’s weird.

Correct. And just because it's on FB doesn't make it false. All we can say for sure about that Ghandi quote is that there is no proof/evidence that he said it. We don't know if it's fake. It's unattributed.

No one claimed that it was accurate because it was in a movie -- only that it was said in a movie. This shows how people could have heard the quote before. It's wrong to attribute it to Ghandi. It's also wrong to call it a fake quote.

Run away from this church. Don't look back, do not waste another mental cycle to evaluate: RUN AWAY. This is not a church founded by Jesus Christ, it is CHURCH INC. and their goal is to fatten the bottom line like any corporation. The only love you will find at such a church is the love of money. Get away!

When I was a Unitarian I was asked to contribute 1% of my income. They even sent the Membership committee to my little basement studio apartment to have the discussion. I had been giving a nice amount each week at the service and thought that was enough. (I was just a couple of years out of college and working 2 jobs). I moved to another state and started attending another Unitarian church, but did not like it as much as the first one so I just left.

Being asked is different from being required. And it's perfectly ordinary for churches to have pledging committees that make personal visits. It's not just to get $$, it's to get to know each other..

There's also no evidence that Jesus died for our sins and that if you believe in him, you will live forever in heaven. Just because it's in the Bible, an ancient book cobbled together over 2,000 years ago, doesn't make it true. A lot of people believe it, though
