They are freaking out that their children will learn about the role systemic racism has played in our nation’s history.

This is another poster with no children...

? only a racist wouldn't want their kids to be taught about actual history and the part racism played in it. I suppose you want history classes to teach that the Civil War was purely about state's rights and had nothing to do with slavery and that confederate soldiers were actually patriots rather than traitors.

NP. The vast majority of school districts have, for decades and decades, appropriately included the history of racism in their curricula. Acting like they haven’t isn’t a smart take.

This school board is out of control. Setting aside their policies and programs, they are hostile and aggressive with parents. They have dox’d parents. There is no school choice in Virginia and this school board is likely to cause that to change. So dumb. That is not and should not be the relationship between a school board and the people who elected it.

60% voted for Biden means 40% were Trump supporters. That’s easy enough to fill a school board meeting.

Yes that area is known for its issues with racism for example the vandalism at the historic black school a few years back. Many there are White flight from Fairfax county. That is becoming MAGAland.

I wonder if there will be a push out to West Virginia.

Lol such innocence. Yes it is appropriate to learn sex education at 14/15.
I went to high school in the 80s. I had 9th grader friends who did experience at this age with BJs. Wake up. I’m sure consent etc is covered. They are not telling them to get out there and give them.

Woo boy. The fact that all of us collectively learned about the Tulsa race riot in the last year is just one of MANY instances that clearly demonstrates that there is a large amount of this extremely relevant history that hasn't been taught. But also, as many have said, these lunatics are screaming about stuff that isn't actually happening.

Parents are also upset that teachers might be forced to used the preferred pronouns of trans kids. And address the importance of protecting our LGTBQ + kids. A bunch of inbred bigoted parents arguing with a worthless, weak school board. You couldn’t pay me to live in that backwards ass county.

You can watch the public comment part of the meeting here.

I would like to see a source for this. And I'd like to see the content, in context. Although I realize we probably can't yet.

If it's "Hey kids did you know Bl*w J*bs are really fun and you can't get pregnant! You should try it! Everyone is doing it! Here's the proper way to perform it!" then I would also be triggered.

If it's the reality that this exists, I'm sorry but nowadays this is a common place thing in sexual relationships and people, even young people, need to know the proper terminology for it, what other people are referring to when they talk about it, and what it is if it happens to them. And how to NOT catch HPV or another contagious disease if engaging in it.

I hope my kids DON'T engage in it anytime soon but 9th grade is freshmen year of HS. Let's not pretend it doesn't happen.

There are a lot of terms I'd expect to be able to say in a biology discussion that I would not discuss in polite company, including a school board meeting.

Before the pandemic, LCPS purchased a diversity library of books to be included in classroom libraries. A group of parents started freaking out over the content of some of the books and demanding they be pulled from the classrooms. The pandemic shifted their attention to opening the schools and when the schools re-opened, books were brought up again. The two latest titles that the people are objecting to are Monday's Not Coming and #MurderTrending. I found the graphic violence in the latter more objectionable than the sexual content in the first, but both are appropriate for a high school audience. Also, in LCPS, a parent already has the option to ask that their child read an alternative title. The people flipping out aren't trying to say their kids can't read these books, they are saying that no kids should read them. And that's not okay. They don't get to decide what my kid can read.

I'm all for teaching about Tulsa and way more about Reconstruction and its aftermath. That said, there's a ton of history, with and without racial significance, that's not taught comprehensively enough. There are only so many hours in the day. So you can't just pick an event that isn't taught and use it as a "woo boy" indictment of the curriculum.

Agreed.

Also my teen objected to a book that was too horrifying for her to read in a history class. The teacher assigned alternative reading material. My child also sat in the hall and did independent work while the class discussed the triggering book.

I don't think anyone's kids are going to be subjected to the horrors of "blowjobs!" if they or their parents don't approve of the content of a particular book.

Pearl clutchers indeed!

Also, the audacity of these parents who object to books when their kids walk around with internet connected smartphones just kills me. You're angry about the things they might be exposed to in books? Have you looked at your kid's internet history?

If you are for "teaching about Tulsa and way more about Reconstruction and its aftermath" then you have absolutely nothing to worry about regarding what LCPS and the school board are doing. You DO have to be worried that a bunch of lunatics are trying to create a false crisis.

Oh, good. I've heard some of the Twitterati going on about the Enlightenment being racist and thought there might be some of that nonsense being floated.
