God this is so disgusting. Breast is best is such a travesty and the consequences of pushing breast feeding above else are really far reaching. If you can’t breastfeed formula is a much safer choice than getting “milk” (tainted with who knows what) from some rando on the internet. |
Agree. The History of La Leche League isn’t all puppies and rainbows either. Funny how breastfeeding forces a mom into perpetual serfdom. What a coincidence /s |
OP here. Do you mind sharing more about La Leche? My friend is doing virtual visits with a La Leche group but won’t see an LC. The baby had lost more than 10% of birth weight and was jaundiced at a pediatrician appointment. From what she shared it didn’t sound like nursing was going well that week (only nursing 5 minutes at a time, baby sleeping for 5 hours at a time, showing hunger signs after nursing, etc). I am not going to bring this up with my friend, per advice earlier in the thread, but I am really wondering if the La Leche person encouraged her to keep nursing (or giving breast milk, even from random internet strangers) at all costs even though it was pretty apparent things weren’t going well. At one point my friend was only giving the baby milk with a syringe (when we spoke I did try to tell her that nipple confusion isn’t a real thing but she didn’t seem to want to hear it). Anyway, now I am wondering what kind of organization is La Leche?! |
They're very anti formula. I worked with an IBCLC who helped me properly formula supplement in the beginning and she really helped me out. |
Her baby is going to end up as failure to thrive. Hopefully she's seeing a good pediatrician. I hate this country sometimes. |
Totally agree with all of this. I will go further and say La Leche League had a history of deep misogyny. |
Nope. Switched to formula at 5 months and never looked back |
I probably would not. I actually donated my breast milk, but it was to women who knew me personally from before I had the baby, so they had a very good idea of my lifestyle. I would be wary taking breast milk from a stranger, especially if the baby did not have any problems with formula. |
LOL this is an INSANE question.
Please read "Lactivism," study up on the origins of the breast is best lobbying campaign and go buy some effing formula for goodness sake. |
I've donated thousands of ounces of breastmilk to banks, individuals (known and strangers). So yeah, I probably would, but after two kids, I'm much less strident about such things as I was when they were little. |
I used donor milk the second night at the hospital when my milk hadn't come in. The hospital screened the milk with both blood tests on the donors and tests on the actual milk, and stored it hygienically. I don't regret using it but if I had it to do over again and realized my milk was never going to come it, I would have just stuck with colostrum + formula.
I would never in a million years get breast milk off Facebook or any unregulated forum. You might as well buy it at a flea market. There's no benefit to breastmilk that can outweigh the dangers of this method - it's unsanitary, potentially diseased, everything. Your friend is in too deep in the "breast is best" end of the pool. |
There are in fact situations where breastmilk is medically necessary. Please don't display your ignorance. |
Where? Seriously, where? |
Premies |
So preemies die if given formula? Come on now. |
