Is Subaru on par/above/below Toyota/Honda as a brand?

7:35 here.

I assume you mean the "Lesbaru"? That's really only for the wagons.

My corner of NWDC is littered with Outbacks. Lots of lesbian guys out there these days.

Whoa now hold on a second, you don't need to be snarky. Everyone knows it's not just lesbians that drive the wagons but there's a reputation for it which the other pp was mentioning. There's a good reason for that reputation, a lot of gay women do in fact drive them and it's because Subaru advertised to them directly.

Those ads are great. I have an Outback and think they're too ubiquitous to have any particular reputation at this point, but that's also a super weird reason not to buy a car.

Some of it depends on the model. Lower end Hondas and Toyotas are not as good as any Subaru. Higher end Hondas like the Pilot are on par or in some cases better, same with Toyotas. Within Subarus, Outbacks are nicer and better built than Foresters.

I posted the ad pictures above. Agree with this 100%. They were trying to differentiate themselves in the early 2000's and it helped them sell into a specific market. That doesn't mean everyone driving a Subaru wagon is gay. As I mentioned, Subaru's are EXTREMELY common in Colorado. Subaru is #1 if your measure is safety. If reliability, I would rank Toyota/Honda first (still).

Essentially, Subaru is most well known for its models that are a bit more rugged and off-beat. If you are looking for "family sedan", Honda and Toyota offer better choices. But if want a capable vehicle with AWD that will truly encounter some off-road driving every now and then, Subaru can be a better choice than any of the SUVs offered by Toyota and Honda.

One Subaru in my life was more than enough for me. Honda or Toyota for me.

I just bought a Subaru Legacy. I like it much better than the Honda Accord (I had a Civic) or the Nissan Altima. Never test drove a Toyota Camry, but they were more expensive for what you get.

The Legacy (Premium trim) came with nice options like a huge infotainment screen, a sunroof, rear cross traffic alert. And of course, all Subarus have AWD.

Don't forget Oregon and New Hampshire. Also, I have respect for a car brand that said "screw it, we're going to market directly to gay people!" If that turns you off or emasculates you, that is on you. As far as I can make it, it hasn't hurt resale values either. Subarus seems to do just fine as used car too.

Subarus are a bit of a cult. But hey, cults can be fun.

I think Subarus are terrible! My mom is a Suburu lover and every freakin time I talk to her her car(s) are in the shop for this or that.

Never had a problem with my Toyota or my Hondas. I've had 1 Toyota and four Hondas.

PP. My parents in Oregon have an Outback, as do I in CCDC, as do my ILs who live in NYC and have a house in Westchester and previously drove only Audis. They're good cars! And I park on the street and I'm happy I don't have to fuss about it. Our other car is a Mercedes GLC and it has much better pickup (we got the 2.5L Outback vs the 3.6 because we mostly drive in the city), but I still love my Outback and think it's a super practical family car. Also its backup camera is better than the Mercedes'.

I'd rather buy a Hyundai than a Subaru! And they have effed engines and pistons!
