Masks and Outdoor Recess

Anonymous
I do wish the CDC would update guidance on whether quarantine is required when the contact was outside. My kids played with a neighbor (outside only while masked) on Saturday and he tested positive yesterday (symptomatic) so they now have to revert to virtual for 2 weeks. My 3rd grader was inconsolable.

I am not that worried about him because he was outside and masked and it seems like the likelihood is small, but sucks that he can't go to in person school.

My kids say they don’t distance at their school. How does anyone enforce distancing at recess?

It's really hard. We have assigned blocks on the soccer field and a rotation if which class is permitted on the playground equipment on which day.
They can play with a ball or jump rope that is brought from home but not share. (Only a few kids bring toys though since backpacks are heavy enough to topple the k's and 1's) So lots of standing around asking when they get a turn to play for half an hour. We constantly remind them to stay apart be sure talking to a friend outdoors closer than 6 feet is way more dangerous than the 3 feet masked in the building.

Would anyone like to read this out loud, slowly, and comment on how stupid this is?

There's a big difference between high school volleyball or cross country and a dozen 5 yos cramming themselves into a tube slide.

Yes, there is. High schoolers transmit COVID to on average 3/4 of a person. Kindergarteners transmit to on average 1/2 of a person. So kindergarteners breathing in each others' faces are half as likely as teenagers breathing in each other's faces to transmit COVID.

While most kids will be okay, there are and will be immunocompromised children and those who cannot/won't get vaxxed in our classes at some point. I know of two EL school classrooms that are currently quarantined. We wear our masks to protect them.

Did it work?
