Hounds!!!! As MULTIPLE PEOPLE posted! Above! Why are you so worked up about this!?

+100. Our hound hasn’t yet tried to run out the door but if there was a fox (or other furry creature) crossing our yard, I doubt she’d be able to resist.

Yeah, you people ranting about training have just been lucky.

I’ve had many dogs in my life that were easily trained not to run out the door, and some that had no interest in doing it in the first place, but I had one dog that would.not.be.stopped. Given the smallest sliver of daylight, he would bolt. He would stay gone for 2-3 days, and then come home, muddy and exhausted, and sleep for two days straight. He was also the smartest dog I ever owned and we taught him all kinds of things. Not running was not one of them.

This reminds me of people who have easy babies who sleep through the night at two weeks and think that means they’re great parents.

What kind of dog was the smart runner?

We had a lab. The few times he ever got out over his 13 years he sat by the front door.

We now have a very smart hound. He’s been through training, he knows all the normal commands. If he’s next to us inside by the door, nothing happens. When the kids come in from outside, he will then immediately go up to the storm door and press on it with nose to see if they didn’t latch it right. If that happens he will happily run out, ignore all commands and run up the street to a house where he has tried to catch a bunny. When he is in our backyard he runs and checks both gates everytime he goes out to see if they are both latched. Say whatever you want those without hounds, but some dogs are going to run if given the chance. He’s smarter than our lab for sure, but he’s not a dog we will let off leash while hiking no matter how much training he had.
