| Like this is such a bad idea I think you could get CPS called on you for not feeding your kid (obvious exceptions for kids with eating issues). Continuing to breastfeed is fine, not giving your kid food until age *1* is 100% not. |
|
You must introduce solids, OP. The importance in both nutrition, allergy prevention and brain development cannot be overstated.
I loved breastfeeding and had a great supply but, of course, gave my kids food starting at six months. I continued to nurse until 18-19 months and then gave them breastmilk in acup (using a huge freezer stash). Your baby needs to learn to eat. |
| I sympathize that my baby is 7 months and I think solids are a pita and her poop is awful now, but I still give it to her!! |
| Your baby will need and likely want solids. Some 11mo are walking! As another poster noted, there is a huge huge difference between a 5mo and a 10mo. |
|
Only cons to the child:
- Iron deficiency, unless you supplement - Lack of opportunity to practice chewing food and oral development - Delayed practice with utensils - Potential speech and texture issues - Nutritional deficiencies because once they really start needing the nutrition at 1 they don't know how to feed themselves |
And risk of allergies! |
When your baby will be 6 mo they will be more hungry then just B milk. YOu can brestfeed as long asyou want year or more but the solids at 6 are totally okay. You don't need to cook any special food, just normal adult food, babies cna chew if you cut supper tinny. Check mothering.com forum. |
|
The only NO untill 1 is MILK and peanuts as they can get allergy to both. But all other soid since 6 is okay.
if you won't add solid they can suck you inside out.. they need SOOOOOOO Much milk at 6 month and up |
And honey |
Check with your pediatrician— ours does peanut butter from 4mo to reduce the chance of allergies. |
| Yes, the advice on that flipped recently. Avoiding peanuts and other allergens causes more allergies. They had it backwards for a while. Emily Oster covers it in Cribsheets. |
As noted above, this is totally outdated advice. 4-6 months is the ideal time to be exposed to peanuts to prevent allergies. The recommendation is to wait to 1 year to add in cow's milk, but not because of allergy concerns -- add in yogurt or cheese with milk solids before then. |
The cow's milk thing is more an opportunity cost thing. It isn't a sufficient replacement for breastmilk or formula under age 1, but a kid who drinks milk is likely to be an the expense of breastmilk or formula. Cheese and yogurt are totally fine for under 1. |
| Oh my. This is why discussing breastfeeding as "exclusive" is not beneficial. No feeding should ever be The Only Thing. Yes, for the first 6 months your baby needs only milk (formula or breast). After that, you should absolutely be feeding your child REAL food AND milk. Until a year, and then you drastically cut milk and up solids. |
Are you unaware of the problems with phosphorus and other mineral (and salt) balances in cow's milk, in regards human infant kids? It's not just opportunity cost. |
