With kids in middle & high school - "gay" is still used as a slur. If you are gay and out - everyone is generally cool with it but if there is any grey area - it is used to attack kids still. Happened to a friend of my kids. I was confused too, since they are all pretty open about discussing who is gay, bi, whatever with no judgment.
