What purpose does this silent treatment serve?

this is really going of the rails. Her mom isn't slashing someone's tires, trying to fill the deep dark hole of emptiness inside, crashing and burning through relationships, cutting herself and threatening suicide if you abandon her. She's taking a break from OP who seems to care a lot but may just be too much sometimes. The dramatics over this are too much. Just give this poor lady a break.

You watch too much TV! Borderline personality disorder isn't so melodramatic but it manifests itself in varying degrees. The kind of stuff you describe is very extreme but there's less extreme and less obvious indicators of the disorder. My mom wouldn't think of threatening suicide but she pesters me into accompanying her to the doctor or church as a 'test' of my devotion and I can do 99 out of 100 things for her but the 1 thing that I don't do, I'm suddenly Public Enemy No. 1. It's very draining and I have gone no contact due to her distorted perceptions of reality.
