So many golf courses, mini golf for the kids, ice cream shops, miles of bike paths, lots of restaurants, children’s museum, coastal discovery museum, different plantations to visit, day trip to Savannah. We have children so we really like that there are more things to do in HHI. We found Kiawah a little limited for a week long vacation with kids. Although, my husband and I have been to Kiawah several times for a long weekend and loved it.

But most people don’t want to do these things during Covid anyway.

Speak for yourself. We went to the children’s museum in Savannah and it was an outdoor play area. We did get take out and delivery so lots of restaurant options is welcome. The playgrounds in Hilton head were fantastic. So many places to go for stroller walks.

I agree with pp that most of these things are off the table for a lot of families during this pandemic although yes, in a general year we enjoy museums and restaurants!

OP has already said, for example, that she wouldn't do a daytrip to Savannah during covid.

Can I ask where people do home rentals from? Are there local agencies we should look at as opposed to AirBnB or VRBO?

(For Kiawah and HHI)

For Kiawah, we've used VRBO for a couple of houses, smooth and successful experience each time. We've also used Akers Ellis.

I rented directly from kiawah for kiawah and vrbo for Hilton head.

We were just in HHI and there was very little mask wearing or social distancing. A bunch of the restaurants are owned by 2 groups and they are not enforcing anything. People were shoulder to shoulder with strangers at the bars when we went in to pick up food at restaurants or were sitting outside. Employees in grocery stores only had on shields (no masks) or masks under their noses. Lots of people in stores without masks.

What grocery stores are you going to? I saw them refuse customer entry at Kroger two days ago for not wearing a mask. Everyone at Teeter, Wholefoods and Fresh Market was wearing a mask.

Other than restaurants, most people seem to be wearing masks.

When we got take out, everyone was masked. We did not go to any bars.

We got groceries delivered so not sure what it is like at grocery stores. I did go to target in Hilton head and everyone was masked.

Just got back and every where we went was masked and fairly empty. Did Harris teeter twice and it was pretty empty. Went to TJ Maxx once and pretty empty and all masks. Picked up from Salty Dog on Saturday night and only one person was at the outdoor bar. Pretty ghost town which is how I like it. We felt perfectly safe distancing.

Need to get over the concerns on masks. They don’t work anyhow. Everyone is wearing including many out for walks on the beach. How ridiculous.

Sounds like you’re taking your medical advice from Ron Wright. Good luck!

Well yes but it was January.

More options for food, grocery, shopping, etc. Water on Hilton Head tends to be a lot shallower and calmer than Kiawah. You are only a short drive from Savannah so you can still get a bit history if you want.

I wouldn’t do it this year but you can also fly, which you can’t do to Kiawah.

You can fly to charleston, sc and drive 40 mins to Kiawah.

Best case it’s 45, typically hour to an hour and fifteen minutes.

Again, you can land directly on Hilton Head, and be pretty much anywhere on island in 10-15 minutes with some options you could practically walk to from airport.

NP. I've been flying to Charleston for a dozen summers and it has never taken me that long to get to Kiawah. Usually 45-50 minutes.

Ok, and I do the flight and drive more frequently than you. It is typically about an hour to hour and fifteen, door to door. Have no reason to make it up.
You can also fly to Hilton Head Savannah Airport and drive roughly an hour to HHI. Again it is nice to just land on HHI and be there.
