ALEXANDRA

Love the name Alexandra. I have an Alexander, who would have been Alexandra if he had been a girl. He goes by Xander. That said, don't like Xandra--sounds weird. We didn't pick Xander for him, that came organically as he had trouble saying Alexander when he was young, it came out sound like A-Zanda and ended up Xander.

There are better NN out there like PPs said.

You can get people to call her Sasha instead of Alex if you really want to. It means you need to use Sasha most of the time at home, and it means you need family on board (Grandma can't refuse to use it, or insist that her "special" nn is Alex or Alexa or something). And then you have to be clear when you enroll her in school that she goes by Sasha and you would like the teachers to call her that. If they instead call her Alexandra, it's inevitable that someone will shorten it to Alex or Alexa or Ally at some point.

It's not the end of the world. My sister Margaret has a "family nn" and then a "friend nn" because we all called her Marge growing up but at school they always called her Maggie or just Margaret. But our parents didn't really mind -- it was really just a nn and not her name, and they have no issue with Maggie (though it is jarring sometimes to hear people say it). It just depends on how you feel about it.

I think it’s a good name with so many possible nicknames. Classic but not overused.

My younger sister is an Alexandra who goes by Ande. A friend of mine who is Alexandra goes by Lexi.

What about what Alexandra wants? At a certain point a kid has a preference for what they want to be called. O's kid may hat Sasha and prefer ALex. So if OP and her husband really hate it they should find a name with a nickname they don't hate or stop being control freaks. Working on not being control freaks is probably a worthy goal anyway, as parenting will kick your ass if you try to control every freaking thing.

OP here, thanks for the feedback. We’re just going with Sasha as fn since that’s the only name we both like.

Xandra is so ugly. It reminds me of a girl named Samantha. Lovely name. But her parents tried to make her nickname be “Mantha” and all I could think of was a huge bug. I only called her by her full name. By the time she was 4 they game up and used Sam.
