| If you want to be able to take a bus to work (leaving your wife with the car) and will be dividing your time between Tysons and K Street, you might want to check out Lee Heights in Arlington, which would get you near at least some shops and the 23A bus (Tysons) and the 3Y bus (K St). Although I don't know if your schedule will permit public transportation. Maybe you need a car. |

Working in Tysons pretty much requires a car, sorry to say. Even if you can get there on a bus, if you want to leave your office for lunch you pretty much must drive. My DH has worked in Tysons for most of his career and the drive from Georgetown, Glover Park or Palisades/Kent is pretty doable if you leave on the early side (before 8 AM). I don't know that the commute from Cleveland Park or Adams Morgan to Tysons is nearly as quick as there is more of the city to get through.
Parts of the Palisades are very walkable and we have some good restaurants. And the houses for rent in the Palisades are often rented to families (esp international) as opposed to students, so they are a little nicer inside. If you are in Georgetown or Glover Park, you can live with one car. With two little kids, a small yard would be nice, but it doesn't need to be much bigger than 10x10 if you have a nice playground or park nearby. If you want to do just one car, I'd recommend getting the bulky groceries delivered (Peapod or Safeway). Also look into ZipCar membership. |
those neighborhoods barely meet the criteria for urban....i am talking about a densely populated, mixed-use city. not a mini suburb that happens to be located within city limits. |
| Repatriated American who used to live in W1 here. I chose a more central DC neighborhood when I returned to the States, but although they're not for me, I might expect quieter areas like Cleveland Park, Chevy Chase, and Glover Park to work well for you, coming from Richmond. Each of these neighborhoods has some sort of "high street" access, although they offer much more limited opportunities for shopping. At least Cleveland Park has a Metro station, which could expand your reach into the rest of the city. |
| My mother used to live in Marleybone (sp?) and I agree with 15:40 that Cleveland Park might be a good neighborhood for you. |
Shopping in Chevy Chase is not that limited. You have Mazza Gallerie, Bloomingdales, the Rodeo Drive of the East. It's not Georgetown, but it's not bad either and it's right on the Metro. A commute to Tysons is going to be terrible no matter where you live. Sorry, but that's just a fact. I've done that commute having live in Cleveland Park, Glover Park and Chevy Chase and it's bad, bad, bad no matter where you're coming from. Work out of your K Street office if you can. |
