Help me with not “keeping up with the Jones’”

I get her point.

The poster agonizing over which brand of furniture to buy, is focusing on the wrong things.

Was that woman bragging about being a SAHM?

Like that is some status symbol (that you are still dependent in adulthood)?

I do not look down on SAHM's if that works for your family, but she has nothing to BRAG about. It is not an achievement.

Depends on how well she married

Seriously. You are gross, OP.

Do people just haunt these message boards waiting to jump on anyone who doesn’t identify as filthy rich? $250k is a great hhi, but it isn’t rich in dc or Manhattan or San Francisco. It won’t buy you a nice house in a good school district AND close in. It won’t pay for luxury cars or private school tuition. This is clearly a tough concept for many of you: Money goes farther in some parts of this country than others. Try to wrap your head around it.

100%. FFS PEOPLE, $250k HHI is not wealthy. middle class is in quotes to denote that there is a range and it might be upper middle class. but not rich. spending matters. FOCUS.

NP, this was just posted in 'how much do you have in retirement' thread, Surely this person is much wealthier that the poster above - and this seems a fairly typical response!

Just turned 50 and have about 1.6 million in mine. Also have not 1 but 2 pensions and about 150k in deferred compensation. Will keep maxing our 401k and start putting about 75k a year in my deferred comp plan. Should be fine when I hang it up at 70.

I have a beautiful home with fantastic interiors and everything is done very inexpensively. Brand names do not matter to me as long as furniture looks good and is durable.
The only furniture I spend big bucks on are mattresses and s and a good arm-chair. We have not moved with our furniture at all so we have not seen any damages. Our furniture looks and feels as good as before. In fact, we have given away our extra furniture to friends who wanted to furnish rooms in their homes.

What are y'all doing that your furniture falls apart? If you do not have dogs and cats in your home or if your kids are not jumping on the furniture or you are not an obese/overweight/large family or you are not smoking at home or you are not filthy hoarders or you are not moving very frequently or you are not throwing furniture around - your Ikea furniture should last you a lifetime.

We are pretty well-off BTW. Save a whole lot on 350K HHI and a SAHM. In our 50s.

LOL what!?! Your IKEA furniture should last you a lifetime? 😳
We’ve had a Macy’s couch for about 8 yrs and it’s on its last legs. Kids occasionally jump on it (as kids DO and should!) but none of your other weird categories apply.

Our Macy’s Radley is only 2.5 years old and looks 10. Kids are rough on furniture.

Large majority of my funithre are designer FB marketplace finds. I wouldn’t buy a used couch but chairs, tables, cabinets etc...it took time and a couple years collecting things as they popped up but I’ve saved thousands.

One couch? What else is in the room?
We have 2 couches in the room 4k each

Crate and Barrel and West Elm are NOT high end furniture stores, OP. Of course you can afford them. I wouldn't buy from West Elm because their furniture is crap, however.

We have had IKEA, CB, PB and WE furniture. Too lazy to spell it out..These are not higher level than IKEA. Nor is Anthropologie. You will pay more lol. Will make you feel middle class.

We have a Macy’s Radley too, about 3 years old. It was $600 (on sale). I put a slipcover on it as soon as we got it and only removed it when we had company (pre-pandemic). Slipcover is a washable gray one I got on Amazon. Couch looks brand new still! And my kids are small (2 and almost 4) and very active.
