I agree PP. Meanwhile the line for free dinner at McPhèson Square was the longest I've seen tonight. |
It sounds like the gf realizes she found her meal ticket, as she's made her boyfriend of a year her entire life. Let OP spend the 50 K. Do yourself a favor OP, and get a good prenup. |
She seems like a great gal! Do you live in the DC area? I’ve noticed that engagement rings are pretty modest here ie it might be a bit garish. |
While I'm glad OP is well, nothing else about this situation sounds great or emotionally healthy. |
Op, ignore these jealous b's. Congrats to you for finding someone who makes you want to go all out to impress her. Maybe find a small jewelry store who would custom make the ring for you and rent the store for a couple hours. Flowers, candles, personal shopping for the ring ... then go out for an amazing New Year's Celebration. Congratulations! |

OP here. She is not like that. She doesn’t see me as a meal ticket. I’m not rich and she makes good money too. She has not made me her entire life. She has helped me through some rough times, but she has her own life. I’m sorry you’re not as loyal or compassionate and caring as others. |
What doesn’t sounds great or healthy? It seems fine to me. |
Your marriage won’t last.
$50k for a marriage and proposal tells me you haven’t thought at all about the important stuff: the actual marriage. It is ridiculous to spend that much on ring and proposal. |
This is funny.
1 carat used to be the norm. Now we all need Kardashia/JLo celebrity bling. |
Budget for insurance for the ring. Also the groom is expected to pay for the honeymoon. Rings get lost or stolen. Wives gain weight during pregnancy and the ring no longer fits.
Wishing DH and I spent more on our honeymoon.... |
OP, she sounds like an amazing person, and you do as well to want to show her how much you appreciate her.
These days, wedding bands often have diamonds too, so that could easily be part of the $50K. A really nice 2-3ct Diamond, planning on part of the money being for her diamond wedding band, and then part of the money for a really special occasion for the proposal. I love the idea above of New Year’s Eve on the water on a boat for the proposal. I’ve always wanted to do that here, the fireworks reflected in the water, and it’s special but also more private. That might be a great option since travel to anywhere not in a car is tough right now. The trickiest part of this is figuring out what style to get. Hopefully her friend has really good intel on what to get and what she would like. But for that much money and how much you love her, you REALLY want her to love it. One option is to still have the occasion for the proposal and something special to signify it, but also let her pick out the real diamond and setting afterward as something you do together, you know? Picking out her diamond and wedding band and your band all as a set together. Not sure how to do that...a ring for the proposal that she would wear on another finger, something like that? Again it’s a huge amount of money for her not to be involved in the choice. The only other thing I can think of is for the friend to get pics of her favorite shape and settings somehow. |
