What clothing items would you get for outdoor school?

Even if the temperature isn’t very low being outside all day in cool and/or wet weather makes it feel colder than it actually is. Layers are key. I’d buy a couple of fleeces, a waterproof shell such as LL Bean kids, Patagonia, North Face, smartwool tops and socks, hats of varying thickness. Goretex boots. Don’t go cheap on the footwear.

Totally go cheap on the footwear. Kid is going to outgrow it in less than six months.

this is so key. No, they’re not itchy. Yes, they’re expensive.

But they regulate temp well, and you don’t have to wash them very often, and they last a few seasons if you size them right.

I love chasing windmills and ellas wool

Just invested in chasing windmills and we love them. No one wants to take them off

My son goes to an outodoor preschool (this is his first year though, so my first time buying) and they are truly outside all winter, I was just looking at their winter list and here is what it includes:

-Snow pants with bib, make sure they go all the way over boots even when sitting down, waterproof the snow pants with a waterproofing thing like scotchguard

-snowboots that are waterproof and insulated. They recommend something like this because the outside is rubberized: https://www.zappos.com/p/kamik-kids-snobuster-1-toddler-little-kid-big-kid-navy/product/8163277/color/9

-winter coat needs to be waterproof for wet + cold days. They recommend one of the 3 in 1 that someone mentioned. I am looking at this one for example: https://www.mountainwarehouse.com/us/cannonball-3-in-1-kids-waterproof-jacket-p13475.aspx/khaki/

-Mittens - waterproof with velcro, like this: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00CE16AD4/ref=twister_B00DW2FH42?th=1&pldnSite=1

For fall he uses a big sunhat, fleece/layers, crocs with socks (they love crocs at this school because they are light, easy to rinse off, kids can get them on and off themselves though since your child is older that's not a problem . They also recommend an OVERSIZED rain coat, down to the knees and rain pants. Rain coat you want to go over the hands and then be able to be rolled up. This helps keep hands and bodies more dry/warm.

Don't listen to the person that said not to get stuff. Yes it is not that cold in DC much of the time if you are just going from your car into school, or running around the playground for 30 min-1hr. But if you are outside in cold/wet for 3 hours in the morning and then a couple hours in the afternoon, you need gear to keep you dry and warm.

Hope this helps! The school should help with a gear list if they want this to work - parents need to buy the right gear for kids to be able to enjoy being outside, and they will - but not without the right gear.

PS if the school wants to reach out to a school who has done this pre-covid for help with gear lists/tips, they could reach out to Eastern Ridge School in Vienna

sorry one more follow up - this is the hat my son wears all summer/fall, can't recommend it enough when they will be in the sun all day.

Second this. They also have a generous return/replacement policy.
