In 10 days, Garrett County went from 2 new cases per 100,000 people per day to 12 new cases per 100,000 per day. That's a pretty fast surge.

They will start seeing the hospital surges in another 4 weeks. The surges they are seeing now in Utah and the Dakotas.

Garrett has plenty of hospital capacity in the region:
https://www.miemssalert.com/chats/Default.aspx?hdRegion=124&hdtab=Hospitals

They can also send people to PA, VA, WV, and Baltimore. It's pretty common for trauma patients to end up in Baltimore or at Inova in Fairfax for example.

Total cases in Garrett County is 147, and 1 death. They've added 17 new cases in the last 4 days. Not great for the small population, but still easy to contact trace and get under control.

Except when those hospitals also are full up.

It's happening in rural areas all over the country now.

In many cases, it’s not a lack of hospital beds, therapies or equipment that worry managersamid the surge, with someone dying from COVID-19 in the U.S. nearly every two minutes. It’s the depleted and exhausted hospitals staffs needed to care for those who need life-sustaining therapies.

The head of the Utah Hospital Association this week warned the situation is getting so dire hospitals there might soon need to ration care. Hospitals in North and South Dakota are seeking staff reinforcements to care for patients in crowded intensive care units. And in Wisconsin, hospitals are opening makeshift ICU wings even as they desperately look for nurses and other clinicians to staff the facilities.

They are two hours away from Baltimore and DC. Hopkins continues to have a low covid census.

Don’t you ever wonder why you root for the worst? It’s ghoulish.

Washington County will enter Stage 4 of return by end of November _if_ metrics look OK:

Currently they have about 20% of students back in school. This would expand it further.

Garrett is down to 14.77. State-wide average is 13.29. Coronvirus.maryland.gov site data. 7-day moving average case rate. Garrett added 3 new cases in the last 24 hours.

I think with such a small population, even one household testing positive really throws off the numbers.

And back up to 15.8 today according to globalepidemics. Data will fluctuate, time will tell.

I'm not rooting for the worst; just being realistic. European countries have experienced a massive, sudden surge in cases, likely tied to cooler weather; and I believe we will do so soon as well and that what is happening n Garrett County will get worse.

We are still in the first wave of the virus here in the US!

Dr Anthony Fauci says the US is still in the first wave of the Covid-19 pandemic as new cases surge to record levels and the country's death toll passes 225,000.

The White House's top infectious disease expert said that the recent increase in daily cases across the US couldn't be considered a second or third wave since the first wave was never effectively passed.

Wow, good for Garret County. Are they doing anything to significantly slow spread?

Allegheny County next door swung up to 28.4! Red Zone.

To me, this shows why we shouldn't just look at positivity rate, but also need to consider cases rate and trends. Positivity rate in Allegheny is 4.46%, which is way up, but still below the 5% threshold set by the Governor for in person learning. Obviously something is going on there. I have read that it might be associated with Frostburg, but haven't seen any public health messaging on what is driving the numbers.
