Power outage!

Currently, I live in McLean and we lost power only a few hours on Sunday. However, I'm going to move to Potomac in Sept. and I'm very worried about a power outage issue.
Does anybody own a generator at home?
Is it worthwhile buying it?

Thanks.

It is amazing to me that relatively minor rain and wind events lead to such prolonged outages, and that Pepco, despite charging massive sums for power, has such fragile equipment and takes so long making repairs.

Yes, this. I had never seen such chaos associated with a thunderstorm (or even rain) before moving to Silver Spring.

Montgomery County: First world taxes, third world infrastructure.

yeah, it looks like 1/2 of Gaithersburg got power last night at the same time the other half lost it. Literally the street behind me and everything else I had noticed was out got power while I and everyone around me who had it lost power...Seriously, why the hell are people losing power 30 hours after the event? Pepco is obviously pulling some shit.

Gaithersburg represent! Although I am not one of the lucky ones who have had power at all since the storm. Still out, Pepco still has a recorded message when I call that basically says 'we'll send a crew out sometime, but don't hold your breath.' (yes, I'm interpreting a bit)

To the apologist, I have no doubt that the crews who are out in the trenches, so to speak, are working hard. It's the management and communications that I have problems with. And honestly, it is rare that where I live has these kinds of issues, but it isn't rare in other parts of the county.

I am in my fifties and NEVER had the sort of extended outages seen in the DC area. A town with giant old oak trees and minimal trimming had less outages in a decade than I see in Montco and Fairfax in 6 months.

Don't dog Pepco for failing to trim trees. Montgomery County won't let them do it.

Can you cite a source for this? I really don't think that is true...I thought power distributers had a federal right of way to maintain their lines...I don't think moco can keep them from trimming branches off their lines anymore than I can prevent them from coming on my property to fix downed wires.

We're in a neighborhood in MoCo that loses power ALL the time and most people have a generator. Yes, they're loud, but they work!
