What does your college student’s relationship with their high school friends look like 1-2 years

A) 80% up to the friendship / person / personality. Are they real friends or friends of convenience (I.e. on the same team) b) will they be back in the area after college or go elsewhere.

I was the one person from my HS “clique” that left the area - they are all still friends and live in the same town - I saw them when I visited for the first few years then only interact with them via social Media. Same for college 5 years out...

I admit it can be kind of jarring to graduate hs with a friend group and realize you’ll probably never be as close with them again. Then the same thing happens with college friends after 4 years.

My youngest is a college sophomore and oldest is a 2012 HS grad (now in law school). They're both still close with their HS friends. That might not be surprising since DH and I are still close with our HS friends (I went to HS in CA and he went to HS in Michigan). DH and I are also still close with college and law school friends. Staying in touch with old friends is something we value and have modeled for our kids.
