Did you even read the article before weighing in? Because the "summary" above isn't remotely accurate. It does a whip around the country talking about some of the things unions are asking for/demanding. And it doesn't say they are arguing to limit distance learning. I pretty well loathe the WTU and frequently call BS when WTU members take shots at charters and charter teachers. There's plenty of ammo against teacher unions to not have to be the face of stupidity by looking at titles and other's interpretations when you have ready access to the source materials. Take 3 minutes and read the damn thing!!! |

A full day of teacher prep and planning each week? Ridiculous. We're forming Wed field trip small groups for interested families in our grade at our school. The Mayor and WTU are really letting families down. No wonder pods and DL supervision groups are popping up like mushrooms after the rain.

It does actually specifically talk about unions opposing live teaching during distance learning. Not sure what article you read? |
Who cares about what parents think, like really? If you don’t like it you’ll either homeschool or go private. It doesn’t change my job. I don’t have a ‘cause’ this is a freaking job and it’s just funny that parents on this forum cry about DCPS’ decisions when in the hybrid model there is not Wednesday. You realize students are in groups right? There are 5 days in the week, hard to give equitable time in uneven numbers and this will hopefully help with a smoother transition to hybrid in 2021. |
I understand that the present schedule anticipates a pivot to hybrid. Are you says ng you don’t actually need all these hours for planning? |
Why do people keep insisting this is planning? At my school we have live instruction in the am and then meetings from 12:30-3:30. I’m going to be sitting in a useless LEAP meeting instead of being able to plan for my classes. |
It doesn't say they oppose it, it says they are trying to limit limit how many live hours they are expected to teach. Those are not remotely the same thing. It also approaches the Perry Stein level of "reporting"by taking a single claim from a single union, or worse a characterization of an interested party of what unions demand and repeating it. It's as credible as when Perry cites a single anonymous post on DCUM as evidence in "reporting" without bothering to mention the dubiousness of the source. |
| Our DC’s math teacher is going to hold office hours for students on Wednesdays. Students are required to tune in at least every other week, so he can track mastery. So yes, there will be teaching on Wednesdays, but small group, more granular. Which I think is an element that is necessary if DL is to succeeed. |
I wish teachers were fighting for children and fighting to open schools and doing everything they can to make sure kids aren’t falling behind. Instead, teachers’ only goal seems to be avoiding working as much as possible. It’s really pathetic. |
Luckily they don’t care what people like you think. All you have is smoke for teachers when the fire is elsewhere. Keep bashing just makes them hate you and ensure they keep fighting for DL even after Covid-19. |
| I thought this (using the Wednesdays on a short/holiday week) was so obvious that I made our school’s schedule for the first term, planned my units, and then was told I was wrong. I also don’t understand the “planning argument.” I get a planning period just like in person school plus I get the entire Wednesday. Let me teach! I have 60 instructional days before my students take the AP exam. (Teacher at a HS that didn’t go 4x4) |
NP - at our school, Hearst, we were specifically told Wednesdays are for teacher planning. No live instruction. What lucky school are you teaching at? |
| My DCPS school hasn't said anything about Wednesday being off. Everything shows they will be doing live teaching 5 days a week. Are we the only ones? |
NP: My 3rd grader is at Murch and she has live instruction on Wednesday from 9-12. |
