I mean, just the exercise of logging in and paying attention whether fully or not is teaching something. It’s teaching attention/focus skills. This is an important age to start lengthening the time kids can sit and focus on something, including undesirable activities. In that same vein, it’s also teaching discipline. Then you get the lesson, and hopefully that is teaching letter recognition, writing, and sounds. I’m sure packets will be distributed to accompany the lessons.

“Undesirable activities”? No. Engage them longer in what they actually like. Discipline? I don’t want to associate school with pure discipline at age 3! Wow.

Right, but that includes things like "break" and "learning through play". The only interactive parts of the sample pre-k schedule are morning meeting, small group, snack with teacher and family check-in. We were told family check-in would be once weekly. The student commitment is 30-90 minutes daily, as PP stated.

Also if you are a teacher, then yes, you need to take attendance at each session to make sure children are engaged on some level. That is different than requiring students to be present for each session.

We got our schedules today and it's 90 minutes of live instruction for Pre-K. No freaking way can a preschooler do 90 minutes, but it's not actually 8:30-3:00 in front of a screen.

It’s not mandatory. Ask your school. Ours said if your child is not wanting to participate in some things, they understand and just let them know so they know your child is accounted for. They aren’t going to force pre k kids into anything. The option is there if you want it. The attendance is to catch kids who may otherwise fall through the cracks. If a kid is not showing up for weeks, they can reach out and see if they need assistance.

The schedule isn’t all day. It has interactive options “offered” at different intervals. There is a full sample schedule for parents or kids who need more structure. If you don’t need that, don’t do it.

I’m pretty down on DCPS for a lot, but I think they have navigated pre-K as well as possible with distance learning. Here’s the same schedule:

Our charter released its ECE schedule, and it has live sessions in the early morning and in the later morning, with more optional activities in the afternoon. I am waiting to find out what "the minimum" is, and then will try to do that, while maintaining my current childcare arrangements. I don't think it's a good move for my DD to take her out of daycare so she can watch strangers on a screen. If that means we lose the charter spot, so be it.
