honors college at a state uni

At least in my home state, the kids that do that are super douchy (girls and boys).

You have to be a douche to call everyone at every honors college super douchey.

I’m talking about PSU. Some of the meanest, most conniving kids I’ve ever known go to/have gone to the honors college there. And the whole application for it essays about “character”

Yep! And they’re all so embarrassed to be attending Penn State. Both kids and parents say they’re going to “Schreyer’s”!

Also (I’m the pp you responded to) I personally know a bunch of kids who got in trouble in the Piazza scandal, so that so further colored my view of the school.

Will you stop generalizing about ALL of the students who go to a huge school.

It really makes you look foolish and ignorant.

Well, every kid is different so what’s a safety to one may be a match to another may be a reach fo yet another.

For my high achieving kid (35 ACT, 4.3 GPA) her safeties were Pitt, Tech, Northeastern, and Syracuse. For my more “middle of the pack” kid (1290 SAT, 3.89 GPA), her safeties were WVU, CNU, and Arizona State.

Don’t disagree and not the person you are arguing with but this whole website is about generalizing. It’s what makes it so dumb and all of insane for being here.

The bolded are essentially community colleges.

And what is wrong with Community Colleges? Stop being such a bitch.

Glad your DD did well there. I think what may be a safety got one kid might be a great fit for another.

There’s a lot more than Piazza at that school. Multiple THON-connected deaths. Whole school lacks accountability! Would NEVER send my child.

And, as several posters have noted ...sometimes the safety IS a great fit. For the same kid who first considered it a safety.

Highest rank you get admitted to may well not be the best fit for your child . Consider that .

This decision is NOT about you impressing people with where your kid goes to school!

I'm guessing the schools you listed are safeties for everyone because the admissions requirements are low.
I think for the people on this board, regionally, it might be places like James Madison, George Mason, St. Mary's, Towson, U of Del, Penn State - and then some privates.

I doubt PITT is a safety school for most, it is going the way of Case and Michigan anyway, where soon we will see yield protection.

I'd agree with your list with the exception of Penn State.

I'd also add Miami Ohio, Elon, South Carolina, and College of Charleston.

Elon really values applicants that drink their kool-aid. May look to be a safety based on stats but may not work in practice if it’s a throw away app.

Virginia Tech is a solid safety school.

JMU as well.

Apply to Pitt early and it can be a safety. Iowa State is a solid safety and it gives good merit. U of SC, Stony Brook, Wagner, Tennessee, University of Georgia, Clemson, Alabama, Miami University, University of Illinois - Chicago, University of Wisconsin Milwaukee, NC State, UT Dallas and CU Boulder are schools I recommend to my clients

UGA has gotten insanely competitive; not a safety school anymore.
