Burgundy washcloths in place of sanitary napkins

You should definitely look into the Diva cup! I've used mine for over a year and love love looooooove it. I think they cost about 30 dollars (sometimes you can get them on sale for less) but I'd spend that in 2 months on pads and tampons, so it's definitely better cost wise.

So much better for you too! You don't risk TSS. For me, tampons tended to dry me out....I'd hate when I had to change my tampon too early because I knew I was about to sit in the car for a while and knew I'd leak....you can empty the diva cup every 10 minutes if you want!

Also: I have a couple of really heavy days where I can go through a super in less than an hour...really inconvenient for me. Diva cup holds more then tampons. I cannot sing it's praises enough.

Glad Rags is another brand of reusable pad.

I can just see me and all the old ladies at the temple crafting group making those tampons.

I do think the washcloth is a perfectly fine idea. It is only blood, and it is perfectly machine washable. I went swimming off the side of a boat one day - in the ocean - and a tampon inserter splashed up next to me. That is WAY WAY WAY more disgusting than a washcloth in your knickers.

cat toy up my vagina, LOL!!! THIS!

i don't see how the washable ones are considered eco friendly? all that laundry soap going into the Chesapeake, not to mention all the water being used.

Since we are having this conversation..I bleed like you read about, there is a medical reason for it but nothing treatable. Would the Diva cup work for someone like me?

My mom is from a third world country and grew up dirt poor.

When I first got my period, instead of sanitary napkins, she had me use pieces of cloth, safety pinned to my underwear. It wasn't until I was older that we started using pads.

Honestly, it works fine. Just rinse them out, then put them in the laundry (kinda like cloth diapers). And, if you use cotton pieces, they're not too uncomfortable.

Just wanted to post another opinion. Please don't bash me.

Every heard of the expression "on the rag". Your's isn't just a third world experience. Ask you grandmothers, especially those who were of age during the Depression. Mine was grateful when she had rags.

Diva cup would be great for you. It holds 15ml (1/2 an oz). You should go to the site and look into it.

I've done the washcloth thing before postpartum. Felt more comfortable but the pant lines were annoying.

Oh no! I've been using a DivaCup for years - just got an IUD a few months and didn't even think about this. My period still hasn't returned post-partum so the issue hasn't arisen yet. Well, hell.

And whatever to the squeamish types. I've been using Luna Pads for over a decade and I love them. Looks like I'll be needing more...

I use a Diva Cup as well. Best thing that has ever happened to my vagina besides that photographer from Poland. They have two sizes one for women who havent not had a child (vaginal or C-section) air tight container woman you just rinse it out at the sink and place it back in. If you don't want to rinse it you can just wipe it off with tissue. I use baby wipes.

OK Diva cup users. What do you do in public restrooms? Surely you don't walk out and rinse them in the sink right? So is that when you said you just wipe with toilet paper and then you re-insert? How do you keep your hands from becoming....well...so disgusting that you can't open the door without getting blood everywhere? Or is that the reason for the babywipes?

Washclothes - I'm surprised someone said they were more secure (maybe I misread). How on earth do you keep a rolled up washcloth secure? And yes, what do you do with it when you are anywhere but home?

I don't know why the washclothes would cost a lot to wash. They're little. The question I have is whether you would have to run them in a load by themselves. If I rinsed them out beforehand, do you think they would ruin anything if I tossed them in with a regular wash? Do they need to be washed on hot or cold?

Babywipes work. Also, after some practice you don't get any blood on your hands. I wash my hands as I would anyway, but they're not anywhere near as messy as I think you're imagining.

I'd treat them like cloth diapers - rinse, leave in a bucket with a little OxyClean until it's time to wash, then wash on hot. Honestly, if you used burgundy washcloths, I'd be more worried about the dye coming off on my clothes than I would about any little bit of blood.

You read it right. Cloth on cloth doesn't slip around. I have just rolled the washcloth up and placed in the natural crack so you don't see any odd panty lines or anything. I can't use tampons, they hurt and always leak, and there are times when I get a huge gush and the blood has been known to flow over the front of the pad and onto the front of my pants. This has never happened with a washcloth and I have been able to be out of the house for over 8 hours without back up too. I also get boils when I use pads. I think it has to do with the wings and sweat but if I use ones without wings they bunch up and leak.
