It was a canoe, not a kayak. Not that it makes much difference in this case. Article said waves were 2-3 ft high at that time. |
| They also said emergency vehicles responded with in five minutes. They were so far out they couldn’t get to them. So terrible. Absolutely awful. Three other kids, two younger than 8. Heartbreaking. |
| It has been switched to search and recovery, not rescue. |
They aren't cursed. They're privileged and careless. |
Canoes are even more unstable and terrifying! |
Yes, canoes are super scary. I remember being in a canoe at summer camp like 20 years ago, and it tipped over. I thought I was going to die. It one of the vivid memories of my childhood, being so afraid that I was about to drown. I’ve never gone on any kind of boat since then. They really do need to just ban all kinds of small boats like that. They’re just not safe, not under any circumstances. |
While I am sorry you had a traumatic canoeing experience as a child, I am certain there are certified canoeists (spelling?) and kayakers, for that matter, who would not wish to have these watercraft banned. By all sensible accounts, the winds were so intense Thursday afternoon that most experienced boaters/canoeists/kayakers would not have been on the water under any circumstances. And if they were not wearing life vests, we can all agree that vests are crucial to water safety. |

New article with more details:
https://people.com/politics/robert-f-kennedys-missing-granddaughter-and-son-have-passed-away-heartbroken-husband-confirms/ It looks like they entered water in a quiet cove by their home where water was not so turbulent, then somehow got pulled out to Chesapeake Bay. |
Np Good grief. Any sane person would not rescue a ball I'm sure the Kennedys have plenty of balls. Don't blame the Kayaks but, the person who willingly took the unnecessary risk with her 8 year old child. |
I agree with you pp. It is also because they are famous that we know anything that happens to them |
| They weren't at their own home and probably didn't appreciate the danger. Very sad. |
IDK. They are some other famous families that you don't hear crazy things about - Bushes, Waltons, Vanderbuilts. In my mother's lifetime - the Kennedys have had two people shot and killed, three people (only including blood members) die in a plane crash, one person die in a boat crash, one person kill someone in a motor vehicle accident (Ted - not including his cancer bcs that could happen to anyone), a death in a skiing accident, at least one death by suicide, and two deaths by drugs. Honestly -- its the sort of thing that makes one believe in curses. Which is sad because as a family they've done so much for this country. https://www.cnn.com/2019/08/02/us/kennedy-family-tragedies/index.html |

For those of you who left for more rural areas to self-quarantine - this is a good warning to be watchful.
If you're in trouble there's a lot less people around to help you. In addition to less critical medical resources, although that wasn't a factor here. The two Kennedys that died this week were self-quarantining in a more remote area away from their D.C. rowhome. “We were self-quarantining in an empty house owned by Maeve’s mother Kathleen on the Chesapeake Bay, hoping to give our kids more space than we have at home in DC to run around,” David explained. “Gideon and Maeve were playing kickball by the small, shallow cove behind the house, and one of them kicked the ball in..." By the time rescuers found the overturned canoe hours later, the two were nowhere to be found. https://people.com/politics/robert-f-kennedys-missing-granddaughter-and-son-have-passed-away-heartbroken-husband-confirms/

Not true about Vanderbilt. Watch the documentary on Gloria. |

I don’t care what you think about the Kennedys, it’s just heartbreaking.
