I am unwillingly inheriting a cat.

The cat will die.
Your kids will love the cat. Cats are so wonderful and relaxing and bring so much joy.
You can totally keep the cat indoor and not let go out at all.He will used to it fast
and better a cat that is alive and at home then free cat that is dead.

Cats adjust to circumstances. They are such a wonderful creatures and the upkeep is minimal.
You can order food and kitty litter online and you dont' have to clean litter daily, ust scoop
the stuff every two days and add litter as needed and wash box as needed never use ammonia
as this mixed with urine is deadly.

Cat is a gift. It is coming to you in a strange way but gift non the less.
Imagine him being lonely in a cage, waiting to be adopted.. nobody wants adult cats,
they want kittens. He will get killed.

The cat and his trusting innocent soul.. he will love you till the end and once he will be gone
dead, you will miss him so much...

Please make a room in your home and in your heart for him. Look into his eyes,
innocent, pure loving eyes, and think how sad they would be when they shelter people
will kill him and dump on the pile of cold bodies .. this happens all the time..
Heart breaking.

save a life.. now.

What world do you live in? Unless OP is in a position to make sure that the cat never ever leaves her home (which sound unlikely), the cat will kill LOTS of animals. They're truly an absolute menace from an environmental point of view. Some countries recognize how much wildlife they kill and they're trying to cull the cats. If you truly cared about animals and saving innocent lives, you'd take it to a shelter where they put in an injection and the cat falls asleep and doesn't wake up. It's the best thing to save the lives of innocent animals.

Kill an innocent cat so other hundreds of other innocent animals can live?

Not pp, but fixed it for you.

^^ Should add, I've had several cats through my life and wouldn't want to see OP's mom's cat die, if a way can be found to avoid that. But continuing to let OP's mom's cat outdoors is totally wrong, and that's what I was reacting to.

Anonymous wrote:So, apparently I'm just being handed a cat. I will preface this with the fact that it is a VERY sweet, docile cat. A total cat-dog if you will. Each time I've been around the cat it has always been very sweet with my young kids and just totally lovable. But then I got to go home and not deal with the pitfalls of the litterbox, feeding it, vet appts etc. The story behind the cat is this: my 20-something year old sibling adopts the cat, last year they decide moves overseas and basically guilts my mom into taking it. My mom is now suddenly moving to a different state for a job and is essentially forcing me to take it because she's in a rush to get moved. I feel terrible saying no because I don't want anything bad to happen to him. He's great. I just don't know that I can now add this responsibility to my plate (nevermind the fact I'm already upset that my mother is moving considering she's my kids only grandparent and our only source of help).

My main problem is it's a partial outdoor cat and we live in a neighborhood very different from where the cat now resides. It's used to having a large property to roam and then go home, whereas we can basically throw a rock at each of our neighbors houses. My neighbors probably don't want a cat roaming their yards. Also I am afraid the cat will get lost, constantly, and with 2 young children I don't have the time or energy to spend looking for the cat or calling it inside every night. I don't want to deal with the mess and smell of a litterbox. I also have my own elderly dog to deal with! Sibling said in worst case scenario she will fly home in a few months to retrieve the cat but caring for him until then is still daunting - and part of me thinks she's hanging a carrot for me to just keep him since the country resides is very strict with imported pets and it's very costly. Hence why she left him in the first place.

WWYD? Help rehome the cat? Take the cat? I'm completely torn and feel like a crap sister rehoming him but at the same time I didn't ask for a cat!! Please help.

Cats are super low maintenance, actually. I understand your feelings but I think you're overstating the work involved. If you keep the kitty, and I think you should (I certainly would), I'd ask your mom/sister to help with vet bills and I'd keep the cat inside.

fyi to another PP...I have the Roomba (not the one with the wifi, just the basic one) and I love it so much I bought another one. It's incredible what it picks up.

OP, I vote to try out the cat, and also, since this situation is temporary, see if someone you know will foster the cat until sibling arrives.

I'm not a cat person, but a dog-cat cat is so worth trying to hang on to.

And don't worry about turning it into an indoor cat--better than being a shelter cat.

I’ll never understand people who think a cat, even their pet, has more of a right to fun (predation) than the right to life of hundreds of native species—and by extension, the local ecosystem. Do a better job of entertaining your cat inside your house.

OP, I’d adopt the cat, but you’re absolutely right to want to keep it indoors.

I'll never understand why people think that it's OK to keep a cat locked up indoors for its whole life. Live in an area where you think that a cat outdoors will kill native species? Then don't get a cat. I don't have a cat for this very reason.

ALL cats kill native species. Even Fluffy. By your logic, nobody should own a cat. Especially not apartment dwellers.

Another problem with your logic is that it’s based on the false assumption that cats always need to go outside. They don’t. Put some effort into entertaining/petting your cat and it will be fine.

It sounds like you’re saying nobody should ever have a housecat?

Because your argument sounds like:
1. Cats need to/must/should go outside,
but
2. Outside they unavoidably kill native critters.

Is that what you’re saying? I’m with you on the second point. But if you realized the first point was silly, you could relax this prohibition on owning housecats.

Cats want to go outside because they’re hunters. They want to hunt. And roam to hunt. Which are exactly the two reasons why they shouldn’t be let out.

You don’t have the right to kill wildlife, and you don’t have the right to be on your neighbors’ properties. You are responsible for your pets, so keep them on your property. If that don’t jive with your opinion of the best life for a cat and that’s something that bothers you, then don’t get one.

Cats want to go outside, but they don't have to. Many get used to staying indoors, that is if the owners do the work of providing stimulation and love.

Otherwise, this logic leads to the conclusion that nobody should own cats.

OP here. So we decided based on your suggestions to take the cat on a trial basis. It actually hasn’t been bad at all and my kids absolutely love him. Sadly, my toddler seems to have a cat allergy - his nose is constantly stuffy now, especially at night and this is the only thing that’s changed. We are actually really sad about having to rehome him now!

OP thanks so much for the update! I am glad you decided to take in the kitty. Sorry to hear your toddler has allergies.

I have had cats all my adult life. I am mildly allergic to them. I find that I build up an immunity to each new cat within 2-3 months though, so I just tough it out until then. But I am not a toddler, which is a whole different thing.

If you want to try for a few more weeks, try vacuuming. Often. Like OCD often.
And dust. And wash blankets often wherever kitty has been sleeping. And windows open as much as is feasible.
