Why the MCPS schools are not cancelling PTA and other meetings?

No need! Let me illustrate...

Aerial Symphony of Coronavirus
In the back row sits Johnny.. he heavily inhales and blows into his tuba.. the air flies solid ten rows forward, Sussie and Leo sit in front of Jonny, inhale his air as they are ready to blow into their flutes and saxophones where they mix Johnnys mighty breath with their own and off they send it to the next row where Jimmy and Kayla are ready to take deep breath....

Well, not really. Because the point isn't that we're concerned for our individual children or our own selves or families, but we are concerned about the community impact. Kids seem to be carriers for the most part. The point of social distancing isn't to protect our own children, but to slow and mitigate the impact on our healthcare system.

I get what you're saying, but this is one of those cases where the individualist "if you don't like it, don't do it" doesn't apply very well. A communitarian approach makes more sense.

I think you don't know what a tuba looks like.

Thinking of kids playing instruments breathing the air, blowing it out of tubas, saxophones, flutes...

Lol! My kid plays cello, but when you put it that way, seems like it should definitely be cancelled.

Yeh, anyone in the room, violine or tuba.. the air is INTENSE in orchestra rooms.

Bottom line.. music classrooms and band practice and concert areas the biggest exposure for kids at this time out of all school activities.

Our PTA is weighing cancelling 2 upcoming social events attended by hundreds. It would be nice to have some MCPS guidance as we do so but there’s been radio silence.

I am concerned for my kid who is attending the orchestra district festival in a few weeks. However, this is a part of their grade and I can't keep them from attending, especially considering the band teacher is not lenient at all and will not excuse him.

We have a big yearly event scheduled for Friday that was just canceled. Probably makes sense although disappointing.

Seriously? Is this a term paper?

What’s next?... citation to the statement “ bathrooms are cesspools full of bacterias”?

Frankly, this is an opinion, not a science in both cases, an opinion based in fairly accurate imagination
that can lead to facts, should you wish to run tests in the bathroom or the air quality in the orchestra/ band area .. germ specific.

CNN just now..

https://www.cnn.com/2020/03/11/politics/what-matte...to-change-your-life/index.html

CNN)If you thought coronavirus was no big deal or if you thought it was going to go away, wake up.

Your life is about to change.
Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, issued a disturbing warning during a White House briefing Tuesday: Americans everywhere need to change the way they live their lives. Right now.
"We would like the country to realize that as a nation, we can't be doing the kinds of things we were doing a few months ago. It doesn't matter if you're in a state that has no cases or one case," Fauci said, referring Americans to the new federal Coronavirus.gov website for details on precautions to take at home, at work and out in the world.

No, no citation needed.

It is known that the virus spreads through droplets in the air. An orchestra room is teeming with droplets that can potentially spread the virus. It’s particularly gross. And the kids are packed in super close.
