OPM Guidance on COVID-19

We have a leave bank you can use if you’ve used up all of your other leave.

Right now, if you have to be quarantined, you can use weather and safety leave.

Taunting people for thinking it’s ridiculous to charge sick leave during an epidemic is stupid. This is not a typical situation.

What free leave? I’m also not sure what you are implying- is your coworker using sick leave improperly, i.e. for reasons other than illness or doctors appointments?

Worker 1 takes full days of for a 20 minute dental appointment, mental health days, etc. Worker 2 schedules appointments on her off days and only uses sick leave for illnesses. Worker one is nowpaid to stay home because she is now actually sick but has no leave. Worker 2 is using the sick she carefully saved. Now I realize there are people who just started or are recovering from a major illness that have legitimate reasons for not having leave...but many people do not save it for an actual sickness.

Why would worker 2 use the sick leave she saved? I am imagining a scenario in which all employees regardless of leave balances are entitled to take some form of admin leave for any quarantine/diagnosis since this is such a unique scenario in which all hands are on deck.

Why is it ridiculous to use sick leave for when you are sick? That’s what it’s for. I mean I get why folks may not have a lot- this time last year I had just returned from maternity leave and didn’t have any left either. Thankfully the new maternity leave policy should cut down on these situations in the future.

This isn’t Ebola or typhoid. Most cases have been mild and managers should work with infected employees to let them telework once they are feeling better enough to work but potentially still contagious.

I’m more worried about the on site federal contractors who have NO paid sick leave to begin with and no leave bank to call on if needed. They were disproportionately affected by the shutdown last year too.

Because it makes it more likely people will go to work sick, thereby infecting others. It’s not complicated to understand why you need to make it as easy as possible for people to stay home.

Sick leave can be used for appointments. There’s no way I could schedule all of our appointments for “days off.” Our pediatrician is closed on weekends and most federal holidays, for instance.

Also, some agencies can’t telework, so what are those people supposed to do?

DP. They could do that, but it seems more likely they would only give admin leave after you’ve exhausted all, or at least most, of your other leave.

+1. People use leave extremely liberally and then bitch and moan they are all out. I’m careful about saving my leave for times when I really need it and I therefore have hundreds of hours saved after only five years of service. I shouldn’t be punished for being prudent.

The guidance is ... just ok. For crying out loud Republican get-to-work-or-get-fired monsters: show some compassion and flexibility. Can’t wait for you to finally be politically extinct after 2020 elections.

It’s an all hands on deck collective matter, not an individualistic, i’ve got mine situation.

We have admin leave for all sorts of unique situations like bone marrow donation. Why shouldn’t COVID be a special category of leave?

+1. The idea that people should just get extra leave seems misplaced, especially for people who can telework.

dude, I don’t think you quite understand the situation ....

Well, that response obviously clears everything up. Thanks for the contribution.

Medical advancements and increased vaccines for once common illnesses have made it to the point where we, as a society, don’t find any illness (or death) acceptable. Do we really need to shut down society and give people special leave for a virus that disproportionately affects older people?

Probably the same thing they do on weather days.
