How many Colin Powells would you want? There only is one Colin Powell. And all that Boyd Rutherford has done is be the third black lieutenant governor of Maryland in a row. If anybody, it should be Michael Steele, who was the first African-American elected to statewide office in Maryland. Not that either of them has been enthusiastic about the Republican Party lately. |

Who are they highlighting at other schools?
If they’re doing athletes, I could see highlighting someone like Wilma Rudolph or how about John Wall. But Jordan Peele and Trevor Noah as Black heroes? |
John Wall is ok but Jordan Peele and Trevor Noah aren't? Why? |
Is that you OP? I see a decidedly racist axe to grind. |
It's not Black Heroes Month is Black History Month. In 2018, Jordan Peele made history by becoming the first black writer to win an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay. This past November, Trevor Noah made history as the first African comedian to sell out Madison Square Garden. |
+1 and Trevor Noah’s life history is FASCINATING as the child of an illegal biracial relationship in South Africa under apartheid. He lived a history that a lot of us have forgotten and our kids never seen. |
Give me a break. He led his team to the Super Bowl. He had a reasonable expectation of a very successful career as an NFL quarterback. If that's "not particularly remarkable" in your opinion, well okay then, but let's be clear about it. The act of sitting out during the National Anthem, and then kneeling, brought him to prominence in a different arena, but he didn't have a guarantee that that's what would happen. Hence the word RISK. He took a risk, which happened to pay off financially. But he also lost his opportunity to play NFL football and was vilified by many, including leadership. He didn't sacrifice himself, but he did take a huge gamble. Again, this can lead to a good discussion with young people about what is worth such a risk and how important are certain principles to you. Would you risk your spot on XYZ activity to make a statement that you believed in? |
| OP, the question is, what about CK triggers you? What's your issue with this? Why do you think you get to decide which *Black People* get to be featured in *BHM*? |
This is exactly right. He's an opportunist as I mentioned upthread. |
Why not acknowledge AAs who are Republican? In this age of "intersectionality," it's appropriate, no? |
If you're saying that black Republicans are notable for being Republicans who are black, maybe think what that says about Republicans. |
Exactly. |
#1 - Obviously the school is spotlighting popular contemporary individuals of cultural significance. Boyd Rutherford isn’t popular. When has he ever been trending on Instagram or Twitter? #2 - Just because the school is spotlighting select contemporary individuals doesn’t mean kids aren’t being taught about any other blacks. They could very well be learning about Colin Powell and Condeleeza Rice. They could very well be learning about Michelle Bernard and Michael Steele. #3 - It’s primarily conservative troglodytes who emerge from their caves in February that glance at the calendar and ask: “Why don’t we have White History Month?” |
1) That's not what intersectionality means. At all. Read Kimberle Crenshaw. 2) Relatively few Black Americans are Republicans. 5-10%. I have seen Colin Powell and Condoleezza Rice featured on MCPS Black History Month posters and displays. Out of 10-40 people, that's about right. 3) Are you demanding special treatment for Republicans? Sounds like you are. |
+ 1000 My H is a Republican cop and he fully supports Kaepernick and wishes somebody like him came along when he was a young cop watching the injustice day in and day out. |
