This has cleared my son’s acne by at least 50% since he started about 4 weeks ago. The prescription creams did nothing.

What is he using as a cleanser and moisturizer?

10% bp wash in morning and 5% at night. Moisturizer is acne.org (so is 5% wash)

We haven't done the antibiotic but I have read that it is very targeted and only works on the bacteria that kills acne unlike the other antibiotics that you get for a sinus or other infection which have a broader range of what they kill.

Which antibiotic are you talking about? My daughter was prescribed regular ol doxycycline for acne. Is there a specific acne antibiotics? I am super confused by this statement.

This is a great article on treating acne and the newer way derms should be providing treatment. https://www.dermatologytimes.com/acne/paradigm-shift-treatment-acne

My daughter is also taking doxycycline and has seen no results - has it worked for your daughter? I’m planning on telling the doctor we want to stop. She’s been taking antibiotics for too long. We may start her on Accutane this summer and just be done with it.

They are probably talking about sarecycline which was developed for acne. If you are using antibiotics for your kids acne, you really should read this article: https://www.dermatologytimes.com/acne/avoid-antibiotics-acne-treatment-when-possible/page/0/1?utm_source=bibblio_recommendation

The doxycycline works extremely well but our dermatologists have been very restrictive on prescribing it (which I totally understand). So it comes back as soon as she stops. But, yes, it’s definitely been effective when she’s on it.

My daughter’s dermatologist recently told us it’s safer (in her opinion) to skip all the antibiotics and just go to Accutane. I’m considering this, as nothing else has worked and we’re tired of pumping our kid full of antibiotics.

I wonder if other dermatologists agree with this PP. I started going to my dermatologist at age 12 or so. I did all of the topicals and then the antibiotics. He finally agreed to Accutane when I was in my mid 20s. That was a looooooong time to suffer from awful cystic acne.

I know that there are bad stories about accutane, but millions have taken it safely-- I know multiple adults, including myself, who have told me they were on accutane with no long term, negative effect. I will do accutane for my DS before I put him on antibiotics.

I agree completely but do dermatologists go straight to Accutane?

And at that point, your skin (and your self-esteem) has scarred.
