Middle School Tech Requirement?

Anonymous
My 6th grader is in the arts elective rotation and had a technology class one quarter. I'm assuming that will cover the requirement, no?

This question came up at the rising 7th grade class meeting and the Principal said they (MCPS) are trying to come up with solutions for the students taking band/language. They don't want kids to have to stop band/language but that MCPS is looking at integrating the requirement into other classes.

I have a rising 7th grader.

It would make more sense if MCPS figured all this out before making this a requirement. Now, principals are in a tough position trying to ensure staffing, etc to fulfill this requirement. Have a plan in place, and then implement the requirements starting next year.

Check with your MS Counselor. There is a specific list of classes that fulfill the MS tech requirement.

MCPS didn't make it a requirement. Some schools may have decided to make it a requirement, but as the teacher PP noted, it's about the state report card for the school, unlike the HS graduation requirements.

Our counselor said that MCPS is pushing schools to do this. Unless he (the counselor) was lying to avoid angry parents!

So can individual parents just refuse?

I'm the first quote and I did not understand that it's a school requirement and not MCPS. I did not realize that schools could implement their own standards.

I’m wondering this also.

I’d rather my kid stick with Band/Spanish than take the tech class. Just leave the tech class for HS or as a summer class.

And I don’t want them to replace PE with a tech class.

Hoping parents can just refuse it until HS.

My MS has mentioned nothing about this.

On the back of my DS's registration form it says

"MSDE well-rounded curriculum requires students complete a minimum of one marking period of fine art and computation thinking. As a result, all students must meet this requirement by the end of 8th grade year."

That tells me it's not a per school requirement (which does not make any sense anyway).

So, in 3 years at middle school students need at least one quarter of a tech elective and one quarter of an arts elective. It’s up To the school to figure out how to make this happen.

Or whether to make this happen this coming year, or wait until the following year.

I thought they had to "have access" to a well-rounded curriculum. I did not understand this to mean that children would have to drop band/language to do it. Music counts as arts, yes?
