I love Molly.
Our daughter is Marie, which I also love (obviously  ) but not sure it’s “spunky” (though our daughter sure is!)

I just love the name Molly, and in no way think it sounds "unintelligent". I like short, simple names ending in ie or y. This was our list:
Lucy Sally Anna/Annie Magnolia nn Maggie Genevieve nn Evie Alexandra nn Alex or Allie Sunny - everyone seemed to hate this name and ultimately that made us cross it off, but I still love it Mary - family name that we would have coupled with something else as a double name |

You are correct about nn origins: https://www.behindthename.com/name/maggie https://www.behindthename.com/name/molly But Maggie is defin not exclusively a nn. It was the 292nd most popular name in 2018; Margaret was 129, Molly was 158 and Mary 126. |
