My 11 year old DS has extremely wispy, barely-there eyebrows, and no signs of puberty yet other than tallness (if that counts). His older siblings all had normal looking eyebrows from early childhood and they did become thicker and fuller with puberty. My youngest is beginning to wonder if he is eyebrow impaired, and I’ve assured him they’ll develop with age, but I don’t actually know if that’s true.

Pediatrician told us tallness is not a sign of puberty. And Kids stop growing (upward) once they hit puberty. So the earlier they go through puberty the sooner they stop growing upward.

My understanding is that boys continue to grow throughout puberty, while girls tend to stop growing around the time they get their period.

+1 My brother and husband didn't stop growing until 20/21 years old.

Same. And most grow until 18.

If all boys stopped at puberty —late MS/early HS.. there be some damn short men in the World.

I’ve seen so many boys transition Sophomore to Junior year HS from twerp to beast.

Why do you need to know this?

+1, what on earth is Tanner stage 1 or 2 and who cares??

Umm, I don't need to know and don't care. But the OP seems like she has some basic questions about puberty.

My son has been growing like a weed starting just before he started puberty and has at least 4–6 inches left to grow according to the doctor. He is 14 and his first visible sign (to me) of puberty was a deeper voice and skin breakouts a few months after he turned 13. A year later and he is very hairy, stinky and eats and sleeps like it is his job. He has always been small for his age so I thought he started puberty really late. The doctor did mention Tanner stages but I forget what he said. If you don’t want to embarrass your son, you can always ask his doctor in private about where he is in terms of these stages.

She probably snuck a peek at that too!

FWIW, he had underarm hair in 4th/5th grade—long before any other signs. I also had underarm hair a long time before getting my period.

Not everyone follows puberty the same exact way.

OP here. Thank you for posting. Seems like there is a majority pattern, but not everyone follows that norm pattern. Good to know.

Like I stated, DS has no other signs of puberty. Barely a pimple, no underarm hair, and no voice cracking. No, I have not looked at his testicles nor have I asked. I was just surprised that his eyebrows would get so dark before any other visible sign, like more pimples, facial hair/underarm hair or voice cracking.

This thread has been eye opening to me. I had no idea eyebrows thickened AND were a sign of puberty!

My understanding is that girls tend to grow about 2" more after they have their period, whereas boys undergo growth spurts during puberty.

My DH was white/blonde as a child, but eventually, his hair color went darker. Does it happen when puberty hits? DH doesn't recall.

This happens to almost all blonde kids. There are very few natural blondes left by their mid 20's. It's not directly puberty (hormone) related but happens sometime between age 5 and 25.

Yes. My understanding is that girls grow for about 2 years after they get their periods. Few women I know stopped growing at 11 or 12!

My DS is turning 10 next month. So what is the average age these days for puberty to start? Boys and girls?

This varies by race, but on average, for 96% of North American males, puberty begins between 9.8 and 14.2 years, with a mean of 11.8 years.

For girls, 9.7 years for thelarche (breast development, the first sign of puberty) and 12.8 years for menarche (menstruation beginning).

No other puberty changes. DS is a late bloomer -14 (both parents were late bloomer). He is showing now other signs of puberty. I was not expecting this to be the first sign of puberty. I assume it is a precursor to him starting puberty soon. DH doesn't remember if this was a sign of starting puberty or not. I have very dark hair, always have, so I didn't go through this part.

If your child is fairer haired, did you notice the eyebrows getting darker when they hit puberty?

His eyebrows are not the first sign of puberty for sure! Maybe the only visible sign you actually see.
My son's (14) first sign of puberty was complain of "pain" in the groin area... more like "mom my penis stays up and it hurts or mom my nuts are swollen and it hurts" LOL. That' was over a year ago. Then he got taller and now facial hair is growing.
