First sign of puberty in DS...

Anonymous
his eyebrows have darkened or gotten fuller. His hair color is an auburn/light brown, and so are his eyebrows, but I noticed this morning that they are now darker or fuller so they appear darker.

No other puberty changes. DS is a late bloomer -14 (both parents were late bloomer). He is showing now other signs of puberty. I was not expecting this to be the first sign of puberty. I assume it is a precursor to him starting puberty soon. DH doesn't remember if this was a sign of starting puberty or not. I have very dark hair, always have, so I didn't go through this part.

If your child is fairer haired, did you notice the eyebrows getting darker when they hit puberty?

He may have underarm hair that you haven't seen -- which is the legit first sign of puberty. I do know that many teen boys have those huge eyebrows.

I don't think 14 is "late bloomer" territory in boys at all.

Really? Because ALL of his friends except one have started puberty already.

My son’s first sign is hair sprouting down below - underarms are still clear. It will happen, OP.

No, and I’ve never heard of any eyebrow changes as a sign of puberty. I noticed my kid’s appetite getting bigger and then a growth spurt.

Glad to hear this because I feel like my 12 year old boy is late! Good to know he’s not alone.

It’s not biologically. It’s just that the majority of kids now start on their earlier side. My oldest son turned 14 thus Fall and is just starting his growth spurt. Most of his friends shot up astronomically the past 1-2 years. He does have a size 11 foot- but vertical height is just now starting.

Why the focus on knowing?

The first sign of puberty in boys is enlargement of the testicles and the start of pubic hair. Not something you can necessarily see if you have modest boys. Facial hair and underarm hair develop toward the middle/end of puberty.

Is he fair haired? Obviously, you won't notice the darkening of the hair for dark haired boys, but what about fair haired boys?

OP here..

I know that some people who were blondes as kids eventually end up with darker color hair, so obviously at some point, the hair color gets darker as they get older. I just never thought that this would be the first visible sign of DS hitting puberty. It just took me by surprise. I couldn't stop staring at his eyebrows. It was just so odd. Even he noticed it that night and made a comment to me about it. I asked him if he noticed any other body hair getting darker or thicker, and he said no.

But it's growing body hair; it's his eyebrows. They seem to have either gone darker or gotten thicker. I am not sure which one.

Both my son and daughters eyebrows became thicker and hair grew in the middle. I know because it bothered them and they asked for help so they didn’t have a unibrow. We are dark and relatively hairy people.

He is fair. He’s pretty far into puberty and his eyebrows don’t look any different. Sorry, no idea.
