Arlington schools

In case anyone military is reading this, we do have rights regarding fair schooling come to find out. That means our kids can have the opportunity to enter the lottery and not miss out just because we have orders to move 2 months into the school year.

Just FYI, ASFS (Arlington science focus school) will be at 140% capacity next year. Specials are in the hallway. Classes are at max size. Lots of parents and kids may be anxious and moody next year because they will (most likely) be redistricting most of the school to Key. It a big deal for 8months, but just wanted to let you know it may be a tough year there.

You can read the thread “Myths about Key” for a background.

I get this in theory, but I’m not sure how it would work. If they lottery has been done for that school year, how would you get in?

ASFS actually goes light on the iPads in the younger grades. I don’t think my kid used them until third, and they never sent them home. It’s a more strict environment than many Arlington elementaries. You will not be the only military parents there.

My husband is military and we will be commuting to Anacostia Bolling in DC. I will need to call and see what the requirements are to get on the list...we qualify income wise for prek, and I was hoping to do only 1 drop off.

Isn’t there a service the military offers to help with all this? Countless military families have passed through Arlington (or are in Arlington now). Isn’t there a housing allowance? APS seems very military friendly.

I’m case it’s helpful op here is more info on aps policy around iPads and shares research on how much they are used to give you a sense. Your first grader would have very minimal use but your 4th grader would have more

Suggest OP go to military child care. Com and get on the list for daycare at JBAB. DH can drop off one and you the other. Or you can get there via the HOV. You can live along the Pike for that price but you won't find too many places but they are there. I live on the Pike and there are a lot of military families here.

My kids go to Abingdon but I’m not a weirdo about iPads. Maybe you should join the Arlington Education Matters FB page to find your tribe

....so that I can find my "weirdo" tribe? Goodness, I didn't realize that the desire to have my kids use actual pen and paper made me a weirdo. For every 2 useful comments from helpful people, there are 3 rude ones.....I can hardly wait to move to Arlington!

Yes, our BAH is only $2780 to be exact. We don't live a life of luxury in the military!

DCUM is hardly representative of Arlington. Asking for help and advice from an anonymous forum like this one will inevitably involve some comments you won’t like. If you had read DCUM before you posted you would know this. Despite this there is nothing else like it which makes it worth the negatives for most of us.

This is what our mortgage for our 3 bed/2 bath is in South Arlington.

Meant to say there are plenty of rentals in your price range, for a house or townhouse.
