Awful bus ride

I have no problem with Zumba saying that he probably didn't speak a word of English. She probably assumed that after repeatedly trying to communicate with the driver who either ignored her or didn't understand her. And how is it "racist" to say he didnt' speak English. Is everything in this town about race? he could have been a white dude from France and still not speak English for all we know.
Zumba, report his ass. I'm tired of Metro employees taking it out on their customers. If they don't like their jobs they can find something else.

This post has nothing to do with the poster and everything to do with the driver who was not doing his job.

Why do we have to maintain anything PC about someone clearly not doing their job? Isn't their job to safely get passengers to their destination? He failed miserably. Why do we have to bring PC into everything?

Sometimes we can all be really annoying. At least she has the guts to be open about who she is.

If a DC BUS DRIVER can't understand the word "Metro," there is a serious language problem and Zumba has every right to vent.

Zumba selectively writes under her name. She admits to writing under annoymous as well. That is not gutsy at all.

she wrote anonymously ONE TIME and admitted it.

There is definitely a poster on this board who has it out for her - probably because she is positive and I guess that person is jealous? I find it puzzling. Do we really need an excuse to jump down her throat? She is venting, as many of us have done on this board.

NP here. I doubt Zumba has only written once anonymously. She chafes me too.

Assuming someone speaking another language is a recent immigrant who came for a job? That's racist.

Stop assuming so much

Do you know what racism is? Because your post doesn't indicate that you do.

It sounds like a fact to me. Sounds a hell of a lot ruder to look so down on someone who doesn't speak English that you see it as an insult.

NP here. I completely agree.

The OP spoke to the driver in English. He didn't listen. I'd assume the same thing. He doesn't speak English. Not racist. You're being racist if you assume that it's an insult.

Bottom line. Some of us are actually glad to have jobs. Imagine that.

I'm sure "some of you" are. But according to Zumba's account of this incident this driver apparently is not. Otherwise why would he be doing something that is against company policy. Or do you do whatever the hell you want at a job you like and want to keep? I sure don't.

the bus driver didn't listen to OP because he's on the phone. to assume and say anything about his English is condescending and derogatory.

You people do know that there are many peope in this metropolitan area who do not speak English, right?

You know that I don't care what they speak, but when in Rome......

Travel somewhere else where English is NOT the primary language, and they don't speak your language, and see how accommodating they are.

read the post below 10 times and tell me again if it's not unnecessarily.

Wouldn't English be part of his job requirement? For safety reasons, if nothing else? Isn't this common sense?

Oh, forgot where I was....

Read the post below 10 times and see if you can make a connection between that and her saying he didn't understand English.

pointed to the metro, and the bus stop we just passed and said stop, stop! He stops a block past it.

I don't know if English proficiency is a requirement to operate a bus. I know that you do not have to speak a lick of english to obtain a driver's license or a commercial driver's license. I think when they are seeking qualified operators the only criteria is non-criminal convictions and a valid CDL.
