That is beyond. He needs to grow the eff up.

No one in this world needs a 45 minute shower.

Agreed, but my husband is the same. He just loves being in warm water, whether it's a tropical beach, swimming pool, sauna, or simply the daily shower...

That's fine.

And, environmental considerations aside, I hope yours has the executive skills and level of respect necessary to not do so when there is a line of others waiting behind him to shower.

Don’t you have another shower or two? Why do you have to wait? We have 3 and 3 people can take shower at the same time.

Or simply, "3 people can take a shower at the same time."

That works too!

Take the lock off the bathroom door. It will probably solve the problem immediately.

I don’t see the problem. I have five kids. They are all 18 and older. You are the parent. Tell him he has ten minutes to shower in the morning. If he stays in longer, you punish. Take his car, phone, computer.....whatever works...for the rest of the day. Your house, your rules.

Seriously! This is the answer, mom.

A parent with common sense! This is a rare find on DCUM.

Seriously. Some of these suggestions are beyond. Taking the lock off the bathroom door? Embarrassing the kid about masturbation?

Be a parent.

OP here.

I agree with this, in theory.

And we, as a collective, have been watered down in our ability to parent. We are counseled to sit them down, have a conversation, discuss consequences, give them a voice, etc., etc. etc.

So...

Discuss/negotiate/enforce boundaries? Or just punish?

OP - you DO know what he's doing in there, right? You want him doing it there, not somewhere else. Get a much bigger water heater. Others take their showers some other time.

Of course I know.

And, the issue is not the size of the water heater, or others taking their showers at another time. If he wants/needs to be doing that, he can manage it in ten minutes in the morning, or take as long as he’d like at night.

This is very simple. Tell him how long he has. Set a timer for him. Tell him if the shower is still running afte 10 mins you are coming in. He will sort it. Also you could just stand outside the door singing show tunes which would ruin any masturbating OR could create weird sexual feelings about Broadway. I know it is frustrating but there is no reason to make this into WWIII ! Of all the things teens and frankly people can do to you this is pretty benign keep it in perspective.

Gross

Leave him be. He's solving the problem, in the shower, the best be knows how.

I don’t see how my comment is any more gross than the fact it is happening in the first place. And his “solving” his problem is creating another problem for the whole house.

If this was happening at night, aside from wasting water, it would be much less of an issue.
