I want a dog but

Do you have friends with dogs? My cousin was terrified of dogs but we had one and helped her overcome it. We had a stupid, goofy, overly friendly lab. We did this in stages.

Dog in crate in same room
Dog in crate and she put a treat inside the crate
Dog in crate but door open and she gave treat.
Dog in crate with door open and she held treat in hand
Dog out of crate but directly at our side
Repeat treat steps
Dog with slack on leash and repeat treat steps
Dog off leash and repeat treat steps

She now has 3 dogs

We brought our puppy around to a neighborhood gathering of kids--we wanted to socialize the dog and thought the kids would love it. All of them were terrified, and the dog's behavior was fine. Are kids wimpier than they used to be? I grew up with dogs so maybe I don't get it.

I think it is because people let thier dogs jump on people and expect kids to know what to do. We had someone yell at my son for acting afraid of thier dog because it was bad for thier dog. He was not acting. He was scared because thier dog is a terror. So yes, now he has a fear of dogs.

This. Many dog owners think it’s okay to let their large dogs jump up at kids. A dog actually bit my son’s hand as we were passing by on a crosswalk. The dog owner shouted at my son.

See if you can foster puppies. Or raise a puppy for an organization that trains them for work (you have them for their first year, I think)
You’ll have a short timeframe, so if it doesn’t work out, no harm.
