Your post is not offensive. You simply asked a question.

Just because your DS graduated from medical school does not make you an admission expert in BS/MD.

OP should not listen to people here. If your DD is interested in the BS/MD program, she should definitely apply. She has a very unique skill that very few people have. Artists are very creative people and I would pick her over someone with perfect GPA/SAT/community services. Your DD does not need to convince every schools with BS/MD programs out there, she just needs to convince one.

You don't know much about art do you? If a painting is sold for 40K, about 50% of that goes into art gallery owner and agent. The artist gets about 20K. It takes a long time to create a painting.

She's in high school, and just made 20k.

If I painted 3 pieces of art a year worth 20k each to me, I would make as much as I do in my full time position with a master's degree.

So sure, apply to VCU, it does hurt to apply. But she will.be competing with other students who don't have the option of making an extra 20k a year with their hobby.

It is not that easy to make 3 "quality" pieces of art a year. 60K/yr for someone with a master degree. That is not much. Which field are you in?

Didn’t David Hogg attend Harvard with mediocre SAT and grade? He only needs to convince one school, Harvard, to accept him.

He wasn't accepted to a dual BA/MD program. He was accepted to Harvard. Harvard loves activists. Medical schools couldn't care less.

He didn't have to convince anyone. Harvard goes after "famous" kids like him. Going to med school is completely different than typical college process. Your fame won't get you in. If he weren't famous, no way in hell he would've gotten in.

How do you know this? do you sit on the admission committee?

How do you know this? There are many dynamics in the admission process that both you and I don't know.

It reminded me that a few months ago I had to hire a person for a 120K/yr job who is much less qualified for the job over another candidate who is much more qualified, but I had to do it because the much less qualified candidate is a nephew of the company CFO.

Newbie here - how have some of these kids taken 8-10 APs with scores by fall senior year?

Looks like there are some know nothings for parents on here with comments like "how do you know" and "strivers and tiger parents".

OP here. Yes, I realized that her grade is low for these programs but I heard on NPR many years ago about NY medical school for non-traditional path students: https://www.npr.org/sections/health-shots/2013/02/27/173079246/new-york-medical-school-eases-nontraditional-path-for-admissions

I would hope the BS/MD program value students with artistic skills to at least consider them for those slots.

Actually no OP. They should not consider these kinds of extracurricular activities—unless they were on top of acceptable academics.

If your daughter wants to go to med school, she should be undertaking AP bio, AP chem, and AP physics assuming a school offers them, in order to indicate that she is taking the most rigorous path possible in science and also to help make sure she gets over a 3.0 GPA in all science courses in college. She has to maintain that in order to stay in a BS/MD program, and to get into med school from a regular BS program. She also need to start spending time shadowing and volunteering.

Sometimes, I just laugh at this board. I am a physician. I went to NOVA. Yes, Nova. I did zero APs. I actually studied nursing and then decided to pursue the med school pre-req's. I went to VCU and then UVA. It happens.

It wouldn’t hurt to apply but I wouldn’t go the BS/MD route mostly because it think it is way too young to commit to medical school. My Med school has this program and if people don’t make it to the second year, usually they are in this program. I would encourage your daughter to apply to a school where she can do art and then do premed classes. Do not play around with those classes!!!! The GPA requirements are very very high!! She needs to maintain a 3.7 or greater. MCAT should be no less than 80th percentile. I disagree with the other posters- once she has the grades from college and the mcat the art will most def set her apart.. there are great instagrams with Med students who draw. Def make sure you have the right field do not make the mistake of saying optometrist- now that will get your app thrown out. Good luck - this path is not for the faint of heart so make sure she really wants it and not that you want it for her.

This. She needs to explore her interests and her aptitudes, and then she will know what she should major in.

OP, your DC needs to think about how she will handle the heavy science course load of premed and med school. It's not only about getting in, it's about getting through it after that.
