I think it depends on the context. My large Golden never retaliates when small dogs are yapping at him. But, if a dog was snarling and came out of the blue like that? I don't know what my dog would do. There is a different that dogs know and we humans don't. I am imagining that this dog truly jumped at OP's dog and was bite which OP's dog prevented. |
| was to bite |
| I do not understand owners of small dogs. It is like their brains think they are babies! My next door neighbor lets his tiny dogs poop all over my front yard! And pull like crazy to get to my large dog. It is ridiculous, this huge man is pulled by a 10lbs rat. |
| In MoCo dogs have to be on a 6 foot leash. Where are you OP? |
This is how my Golden, Pitt Mix and GSD have always behaved when a little dog comes at them yipping, snarling and snapping. My dogs have never reacted aggressively, at the same time, I do not think it's fair to put them in a situation where they are being attacked by a smaller dog. The onus seems to be on the big dog to just take the abuse from the little dog. That is wrong and it's why I stopped walking my dogs. |
I agree, it is unfair to put your dog in that situation and not defend it. I'll put myself between my dog and anything that comes at her, and I am not afraid to kick a dog. |
I think that putting myself into danger of being bit might actually spur my dogs to defend me. I'm not going to do that to them. |
Mine are pretty sure that I've got everything under control. |
| Owner of non-attacking GSD here. When these small dogs came out snarling and biting, there was absolutely no damage done to my dog. His thick ruff is no match for a yorkie's tiny mouth. |
| Big dogs should be muzzled |
The little dogs can tear an ear, scratch an eye, bite a nose, rip a lip of a big dog. Have you ever been bit by a little dog? If so, you would know that it DOES hurt. Just because your dog has the patience of a saint does not mean that your dog is o.k. with being attacked! |
| If a dog is ON leash and OFF leash dogs approach and attack and my ON leash dog bites/lunges/attacks, etc. The OFF leash dogs are at fault. It does to matter the size of any of the dogs. |
OP here. I feel terrible for the little dog -- really terrible. But there were two little dogs off leash surprising my big dog on leash on a DC street. Not just one little dog. And it happened very very quickly, before I could react. You just don't expect unleashed dogs on DC streets. |
Sure it is possible... but I am there to kick the little dog away. I certainly do not give them any opportunity to hurt my dog. I agree that the OP's reacting big dog is not legally at fault whatsoever. But, I stand by initial reaction that I would be horrified if my big dog seriously injured another dog. On a related note, babies/toddlers/pre-schoolers can certainly hurt a big dog too with eye pokes and ear yanks and hair pulls. And, yes, the owner/parents need to immediately stop the child. But the big dog should not react aggressively in that initial second. |
I love little dogs. Of course I'd be upset if a little dog provoked a big dog and a dog got hurt in the process. The people I blame are the irresponsible owners who are allowing their fur babies to run into to the street and attack unsuspecting owners and their leashed dogs. That is not ok. That's like me slamming my Smartcar into your Hummer and blaming you because your vehicle is bigger than mine. |
