I started dating a much higher quality woman who is now my wife and whom I have two wonderful children with and I have not nor do I intend on cheating on her. As to the question of why get married, we are an excellent match and our values on many things are aligned.
I'm a woman, and I had a group of guy friends like this in college. They weren't the best boyfriends, not always faithful, very superficial in their choices. Almost to a one, they 'got over' that in their late 20s - early 30s, started serious and monogamous relationships, and got married. All but one are parents now, mostly really involved ones.
Yes, sometimes it's their personality, but sometimes it just takes some time to grow up and stop being a jerk. It sucks to be the collateral damage, though, OP.
