I am sorry, I cant find data online but I heard from a parent whose 3 kids went to Langley.

Most people who live in Langley/Mclean and their kids go to HYPS do not attend public schools. Most of them send their kids to Potomac, St. Albans, Sidwell, NCS, Holton, etc...

Middle class families in Langley send their kids to Langley HS.

I agree but I am wondering if those middle class students get to go to HYPS. There is very less data out there for Langley or Mclean but I do hear that Langley is tough academic wise. Not as much as TJ though which is a STEM school.

Yes, kids from Langley do go to HYPS but the number is lower than kids from Sidwell, St. Albans or Potomac. Not because kids at Sidwell, St. Albans or Potomac are any smarter, it has to do with "legacy". There are so many parents at Potomac and St. Albans that graduated from HYPS, at least 50%.

What you heard is true. Langley HS and Mclean HS are ranked 2nd and 3rd, respectively behind TJ in the state of Virginia. Some years, Mclean ranks 2nd and some years Langley HS ranks 2nd. The asians and Indian students at both of these schools are high achievers. I call them TJ "rejects", LOL... Many of them could have gone to TJ but decided not to.

I like both Langley and Mclean HS. What I don't like about Mclean HS is overcrowding issue.

My kid does not want to attend Langley High. He said people will think of him as a TJ-reject if he attends Langley High because he is Asian. I thought that was nonsense, but now I see his concerns. This is really sad!!

Some people (not necessary many, but perhaps even some Asians) will say that about any Asian kid in FCPS not at TJ. Not sure it matters whether the kid is at Langley or any other high school.

What is not so good about Potomac? Potomac is probably the wealthiest school, even more so than St. Albans, NCS and Sidwell. Potomac probably has more Ivy League graduated parents than those above schools. Didn't you see the new athletic and academic center at Potomac? No other school has this kind of money to throw around.

You must be joking. St. Albans, Sidwell, etc. are where the truly elite, wealthy families send their kids. Potomac is fine - but nowhere near the same level as the others.

Oh, good grief. No one thinks of or calls kids “TJ rejects” if they attend their base school (except maybe the PP). This is just ridiculous.

I have college age kids who graduated from Langley and I came to this same conclusion. There’s just too much bang for your buck to pass up UVA or W&M.

+1. Both of our children went to Virginia schools. Now, one is headed to law school - at a whopping $103K a year. I am SO glad my children didn't go to mom or dad's LACs

+1 -from Ivy League parents, who moved to VA instead of MD even before kids, because of the colleges.

I hope you're kidding about St. Albans, Sidwell, etc... Most kids that attend Sidwell and St. Albans that have parents work in the Fed, GS-14/15. Sidwell and St. Albans do give out much more in Financial Aid than Potomac.

Uh, no. Hilarious that you think this.

A key factor in all public high schools / parents that have typical wealth is we can not afford 75k/ year. Because of that, I had to tell DD that applying ED to an Ivy is a bad idea if she wants to graduate debt free. She has the stats to be competitive anywhere, but I do not have the money to commit to any Ivy without knowing the aid. That means no ED.

Instead, her focus is on William and Mary.

In my experience, you are both right. Most of the super wealthy/elite do send their kids to a Big 3 if they can get in. But there are plenty of double GS-15 types there, too. Plus some financial aid kids. It’s a mix.
