Like many others, my Prius is rolling toward 200,000 miles on the original battery and it's just fine. Yes, it will probably have to be replaced and I will have the choice to spend several thousand dollars at the dealer or, more likely, get one of the many non-dealer battery packs for $1500.

If my battery pack was dead tomorrow, would I pay $1500 to keep my ancient Prius rolling along at 45 mpg? Absolutely.

Not to mention batteries have an 8yr/100k warranty. Toyota is upping that to 10yr/150k next year. Tesla is 8yr/unlimited miles. The batteries are good and reliable.
