Disney on ice — what to expect?

Anonymous
Back to the question at hand, we went last night to Disney on Ice at Eagle Bank Arena after having previously gone to one in DC at the Verizon Center/Capitol One Arena.

The Fairfax venue is MUCH easier. Free parking and plenty of it, with a quick walk across the lot to the venue. We sat rather high up but it's a smaller arena, so it was fine and we could see all the action. There really aren't any bad seats. We wore long sleeves and brought jackets, but that wasn't necessary (I remember the one in DC being colder but that may have been because it was winter). The ticket prices seemed lower to me, too.

This roadtrip one had vignettes from a lot of different Disney movies and lots of special effects (pyrotechnics, fire!, aerialists, etc.), which made it interesting to watch.

Yes, lots of little girls wearing princess dresses (the young boy in front of us was wearing a superman cape). I don't buy any food or trinkets/souvenirs there to keep costs down. They confiscated the bottle of water in my purse, but I was able to bring in a couple snack-type bars. Everyone around us seemed to have snacks and refillable water bottles with no issues.

A good time had by all, including one in our group who hadn't seen any of the movies (but likes ice skating).

You’re awful.

+1 we went last feb, and my "gender typical" son loved it, including toy story and mickey, as well as ariel and Elsa/Anna.

I’m sure my son would love it but lucky for me this idiotic princess culture isn’t marketed to humans shoved in his face the way that it is for girls, so he’s never expressed any interest and I’ll never have to deal with it. It’s not sexist. It’s just a fact that this crap is marketed heavily to little girls. There is superhero crap that’s marketed to me, but not nearly as aggressively.

I love princess culture! Get the stick out of your ass.

Yeah, PP. It's pretty sad you would post here just to say you are not taking your son, who would enjoy it. Your superior attitude is not a good look for anyone. And you still seem pretty sexist.

I don’t take him to many things he would enjoy- paw patrol live, peppa pig live, etc and it’s no big deal - he’s not begging to go. Gussying him up for a princess skating performance is just one of the many things I get to dodge that moms of girls have to contend with, and I don’t. Thank goodness.

Sounds like you’re the one missing out. My daughter never would have asked to go but she was absolutely rapt and still talking about it. I’m glad I’m in a position to give her experiences like that.

So in your case you are the one peddling the princess crap. Have at it.

Are you jealous that you don’t have a daughter? Did you have bad gender disappointment or something? You sound awfully bitter.

Nope not jealous. Just constantly amazed at all ways that it is so much more expensive (in time and money) to have a girl vs a boy. If I’m bitter it’s bc I realize all the stuff that is peddled to girls. (Disney on Ice, manicures, kid makeup, colored lip gloss, wanting long hair/braids and not being able to grow them, trying to grow long hair but constant tears bc of tangles, hair accessories, etc”. This is why little girls by the time they are 8 already have body image issues. So yeah, glad I don’t have to deal with that crap.

Huh? I have a girl, she doesn’t watch TV and has never asked to go to Disney on ice or have makeup or whatever. Long hair — how is that expensive? I don’t get it. Sure, there is marketing to kids but just don’t give them an audience. We know plenty of boys who watch YouTube all day and their parents have to buy tons of crap — Pokémon cards, bey blades, LEGO sets, etc. Consumerism is equal opportunity.

If it truly didn't affect you and you were truly not jealous (ha!) then you wouldn't feel any bitterness about all the stuff that is "peddled to girls." You just wouldn't think about it at all. In other words, me thinketh you protesteth too much.

It’s just something I think is a pretty awful thing we do to girls- mercilessly peddle consumerist ideals that destroy their self esteem. And no, LEGOs and bey blades, while consumerist, do not do that!

We have only gone to one Disney on Ice.. can't remember if it was this spring or last fall, and it was okay. I think it's a bit long and towards the end, the kids were all fidgety. I would bring snacks for sure! As other posters mentioned, a lot of the kids wore costumes and they seemed to have lot of fun.

Hmm - my 4YO boy LOVES Disney on Ice, we've been 3 times. On Sunday he wore his Buzz Lightyear costume and had a blast. We've also done Avengers Live. I think perhaps you're perpetuating the stereotype a little bit?
