That makes it a good school? Every school has outstanding students. Hear that folks? Every school is great! Yay!

What, exactly, is your problem? Let's start there, shall we?

Just how clueless is the average DCUM poster? There is a gender disparity in all of higher education in favor of girls.

JMU also started out as a teacher’s college for women, so you’d expect to see more women, just as at Mary Washington.

It's really not out of line with the average American college.

I wouldn't pay out-of-state tuition for it.

Shows how inane OP’s question was in the first place.

Agree about not paying OOS. But I wouldn’t pay OOS for pretty much any school, nor would I pay full freight for most privates.

We considered JMU for DS. Stats-wise, it’s a match for him. But he just didn’t care for it. But it’s a good school for kids who aren’t getting into UVA or WM.

There’s been a lot of hate for the bigger state universities in the last few days. I think someone is just stirring the pot yet again with this thread.

Yep. So transparent.

I know this. Everyone loves it. They have great school spirit. They love JMU. But is it a GOOD school? All the PPs are making it sound like a party school and fun extension of high school.

It’s a little of both I think. Takes a ton of NOVA kids who are very solid students but not the very top of the class. Turns out well respected grads, and I’ve been very impressed with the kids I met who went. One was my kids summer babysitter and was amazing. But has the reputation of being a social school. And a bunch of kids who are smart and social go with the other smart social kids from their HS. I’ve heard “13th grade complaints”— socially, not academically.

This. JMU is where kids who can’t get into WM and UVA go. Probably on par with GMU but further from home. A notch above VCU, except arts and medical. And a lot of smart hard working kids in NOVA can’t get into UVA and WM these days.

Blanket statements like this make me laugh. Plenty of JMU student *chose* JMU. UVA and W&M aren't appealing to everyone, you know.

Is JMU a good school? Absolutely! I just dropped my senior off today and am so thankful that he chose JMU - and he had many choices, a few more prestigious (and expensive). All things considered, the Honors College was his first choice. His goal from day one has been law school, and he will be well qualified for top 10 programs. Our other DC is enrolled at an expensive New England school that I keep comparing to JMU. JMU offers so many opportunities and unique programs (such as extensive travel abroad) for a fraction of the cost. The president is accomplished and really knows what he is doing - look him up.
