This works until you get a ticket (they have stings sometimes there) or shot.

+1 it's illegal and is a $100 ticket. in DC only suckers let those assholes in. I NEVER let them in. and I love seeing the cops pop out of the bushes where this happens on rock creek and nail them.

What exactly is illegal about a lane change?

This!

Because it is a dangerous one when there is no room and you are cutting someone off. My own nanny got a $100 ticket for doing this once.

I let everyone in. I figure it's good karma for when I need to get over at the last minute. So you can stay as close to my rear bumper as you want, I'll let the people in ahead of me. If we were all a little nicer I think we'd all be happier.

It would be a zipper merge if it was two lanes merging to one lane. In this case one lane (right) is to exit, the middle lane is to exit to 395 South, and the left lane is to continue on the GW Pkwy. OP is referring to people in the 395 S lane that are last minute merging into the 395 N/14th street bridge lane. Different scenario.

I merge reasonably, not early and never late, and then I block. Sit about 2/3 in the old lane and 1/3 in the new lane. I do this all the time and I don't care how angry it makes you when you are trying to get around me.

So you’re refusing to allow people to drive straight ahead of you in your 2/3 lane?

Right. These traffic vigilantes deserve a special place in hell.

Yeah Old Town is full of poor people who are economic failures

95% are from FFX co...if they were from Alexandria they'd have the property tax sticker or parking decal.

OP literally said driving from the Old Town area. But FFX Co has the second or third highest average HHI in the country, since you mentioned it....

That “2nd/3rd highest average HHI in the nation” could buy you maybe a 2BR condo in DC. Raising a family in DC is an extremely expensive proposition which is why most live in the cheaper burbs and commute in.

As I said, if the winners posting in this thread made more money they would live closer to work rather than sitting in soul-sucking rush hour traffic every day and wouldn’t be complaining about line cutters.

Correct.

You know who loves it? The people in the lane that I am merging into. 8 times out of 10, they get behind me to help block the lane.

Late merging people who drive up to the end, throw on their signal and wait for someone to let them in are assholes. They are declaring that their time is more important than anyone else's.

If you were in a 10 person line at Starbucks and somebody walked right up beside the line and jumped in between person 1 and 2 would you put up with it? Never. It's exactly the same thing.

Which is exactly why I absolutely refuse to let takers and bullies like you in at the last minute. I drive a beat up Toyota Sienna. It’s already got dings and dents all over it. Do you really wanna try and force me out of the way with your shiny Lexus? We’ll both get tickets if we sideswipe, you for unsafe merge, me for failing to avoid a collision. Of the two, yours is the at-fault ticket, meaning I won’t be responsible. And I really DGAF about another scratch or dent on my car.... so is it really worth it to you?

Because I truly don’t mind hitting your car.

I salute you.

Signed,
Fellow nonsucker

You're mistaken. The PP is a sucker for waiting in the line; (s)he just has the wherewithal (and crappy car) to ensure that someone doesn't slide in *directly in front of her*. (S)he has no control over the space two cars in front of her, or two behind her, or most likely even directly behind her.

PERFECT analogy! I bet lane jumpers never stop to think that this is EXACTLY what they're doing.

So in this scenario, there are several people who are "cutting" the line, and one person who is obstructing what should be a thru traffic lane for dozens? scores? hundreds? of people? And you think the line cutters are the biggest assholes here?

Sorry, that's incorrect.

So your holding up the people that are trying to go straight? You're insane.
