Yeah Old Town is full of poor people who are economic failures

95% are from FFX co...if they were from Alexandria they'd have the property tax sticker or parking decal.

OP literally said driving from the Old Town area. But FFX Co has the second or third highest average HHI in the country, since you mentioned it....

Maryland probably

+1

Line cutting is a Maryland driver trademark move.

Same. It’s not worth the stress or the risk. I always merge early. But I’m also happy to let you in if you merge at the last minute.

No one should be merging in once it's a solid line.

OP,

It's OK to do either as the mood suits you (you're running late or not).

This is what I do. Usually I wait nicely in line, because the collision risk and consequent stress of cutting in is not worth it. When I'm running late, I cut in.

Which is exactly why I absolutely refuse to let takers and bullies like you in at the last minute. I drive a beat up Toyota Sienna. It’s already got dings and dents all over it. Do you really wanna try and force me out of the way with your shiny Lexus? We’ll both get tickets if we sideswipe, you for unsafe merge, me for failing to avoid a collision. Of the two, yours is the at-fault ticket, meaning I won’t be responsible. And I really DGAF about another scratch or dent on my car.... so is it really worth it to you?

Because I truly don’t mind hitting your car.

ive always wanted to buy a mid-late 80's pick up truck go to Home depot and bolt on a pressure treated 6x6 for my bumper and have a "i don't give a fck" attitude when it comes to driving. I'd follow the laws, but when some wants to to a late merge. "f you". someone wants to tail gate. F you....

I do my damndest not to let lane cutters merge in front of me. But inevitably the driver in front of me decides to take every pause in traffic to check his phone -- leaving a gap the size of Montana that a hundred lane cutters can take advantage of.

Nope. They did away with the car tax stickers this year.

I drive one of those, and I merge in at the very end. It's cool how people get out of my way when they see what a piece of sh*t I'm driving! They know I'm coming over no matter what!

This works until you get a ticket (they have stings sometimes there) or shot.

The Park Police does this frequently at the GW Parkway exit onto the inner loop. I've often wondered what the infraction is since it is not actually illegal to cross a solid white line. If I am able to move into a gap just before the exit, what law have I broken?

https://www.dmv.virginia.gov/webdoc/pdf/dmv39c.pdf

Solid white lines show turn lanes and discourage lane changes near intersections, interchange/on- and off-ramps, and at other locations where lane changes might be dangerous. Solid white lines also mark the right edge of pavement. Arrows used with white lines indicate which turn may be made from the lane. Stop lines, crosswalks and parking spaces also are marked by white lines.

could be considered an unsafe lane change. you'd have to fight it in court with the word of a trained police officer,( who is a disinterestd 3rd party) who watched you do something possibly unsafe. which could have caused an accident behind you.

remember the safe following distance is 2 seconds, or about 1 car length for every 10 MPH so if the merglane is plugging along at 10mph and a gap of two car lengths opens and and you dive in, you've now create an unsafe gap between you and the car in front and behind. if you had to stop short and the car behind hit you, you'd be at fault since you basically took away the rear cars safe stopping area by diving into the open gap.

Same.

Here's the thing - while you are making it a point to stay ascloseaspossible to the car in front of you, it's likely that the car behind you isn't, and you're just creating an extra large hole into which I can merge. So, thanks!

+1 it's illegal and is a $100 ticket. in DC only suckers let those assholes in. I NEVER let them in. and I love seeing the cops pop out of the bushes where this happens on rock creek and nail them.
