Boarding a brand-new kitten for 10 days?

I can ask the foster mom, but I think she has a vacation planned once she had an empty nest.

We’d accept losing this kitten if boarding would be really bad for her.

If I'm reading you right, the kitten would be living in someone else's home for the 10 days - not kept isolated in a kennel, right? In that case it's fine!

That was the case. Boarding not kennel, but everyone said “no, it will be traumatic”. And the foster mom emailed me back quite annoyed, but having placed the kitten with a littermate

Sorry, OP. Well at least the kitten has a home - and there are so so so so so so many cats who need homes right now that you will have zero problem finding another to adopt. I know it's not the same, when you've got your heart set on one particular animal, but you and your family definitely be able to find another furry companion.

Thank you. We’re in such a tizzy with packing that it hasn’t fully hit yet. I’m glad she’ll be with a familiar little mate in a good home.

OP, that's actually a great outcome. Kitten gets to be with littermate, your worries and foster home's worries are over, and there will be many more kittens who need homes. Good luck with the repairs and with your future kitten.

Thank you. I appreciate your generosity. Sadly, it’s too late. The foster mom moved fast because she has plane tickets. She arranged for a litter mate’s family to take her as well and Venmoed back what I paid for the shot and spay fee. We’re bummed, but all in all, we have bigger issues for the next three weeks. There will be another kitten. Thank you though!!!

Cats are usually happier when adopted with litter mates, so that’s good!

No, not for a new kitten. Just awful. Kittens need constant touch, when I got my kitten all she wanted to do is sleep on me and be on me.

Hi OP, sounds like you have a solution. My friend was in a similar one and posted on his company's job board asking for an in-home cat sitter and found a colleague happy to help. Just wanted to encourage you to reach beyond people you know.

Thank you for thinking of us. The boat has sailed on this kitten, but hopefully this idea will help some else. We’ll restart our search once the repairs are done. I imagine shelters and foster homes are full right now.

Ask the foster mom if she can hook you up with another foster mom. I've done it before.

Ugh I'm sorry I didn't read the update. I would have taken the kitten for you too.

Is this a foster mom or is it a woman who has kittens from her own cat? It's weird she "Venmoed you back the money".

Alas, she’s still angry with us for pulling out. I didn’t even ask her to refund the rehoming fee. She did it instantly and I feel like she sort of shook us like dust from her sandals. Admittedly, we visited her home multiple times to bond with the kitten and then withdrew after she already had placed the other kittens.

It’s ok. She advertised herself as a foster mom. All of our past cats were free so I was not expecting a rehoming fee, but we saw it over and over again on Craigslist so I thought it was normal these days.

OP, are you from the DC area? The idea of using Craigslist to find a kitty in the DC area just seems really odd to me. Every county around here has an animal shelter that matches cats (and dogs and other critters) with new homes, and there are also a number of rescues that do the same.

Most of them do charge some sort of adoption fee, usually between $100-$200 in my experience--sometimes less for adult or senior animals.

Don't get one cat, too lonely when the owners leave for extended vacation.

My DC used to cat sit for neighbors when they were on vacation. It breaks my heart to see a cat following us to the door when we leave...

Many shelters and shelter-affiliated fosters post on CL during kitten season. Browse and see for yourself.

They are so full right now. It's kitten season, until fall. You will be doing a real good in the world if you adopt a cat - or two! - when you are ready.
